Hello all.

New to Landyzone and ever since I found this forum I can honestly say I love it. :D Good mix of humor, know how and help I must say.

Ever since I got rid of my lovely Disco about 4 years ago I had this itch. :eek:
I could not put my finger on it until I saw her again. :cool: My darling was alive and kicking and I knew right then and there I had to win her back. hehe :eek:

Anyways, long story short; I am now the proud owner (again) of my 1997 Disco 1 and I am in the process of getting her a make-over.
Any advice on what to look for etc. would be much appreciated.

I am doing a full body re-paint as we speak (pics. below) and I am in dire need of Tires. Was looking at the Good Year and BF Goodrich All Terrain and M/T series.
I really need help on what to pick. I want to keep the original factory sizes and/or tire specs for what the tire companies offer for the Disco 1.
Basically, what tire sizes are advisable for the original rims?
I am not going to lift her or change shocks and what not.
I will be using her for a somewhat daily driver but mostly use her for going to the mountains for outings, hunting, fishing and also for trips to the snow. I like going to 4x4 outings etc. and in some cases I will be using her for Recoveries too. Will be hauling a trailer (about 1 Ton) and a boat trailer. Boat is a 25 footer. So, road use, beaches, sand, rocks, minor to medium crawling (rock) and hauling/Recovery work.

well, theres a can of worms.

original sizes are 205/80/16 or 235/70/16.

our 300tdi has got 225/75/16 BFG AT on it which are a nice look and size. id try to push a little bigger personally, but thats up to you.

anyway, welcome back to Landy"my cars always ****ing broke"Zone :)

In these pics you can see (as much as you can see from these shoddy pics.:doh: ) the filler and at the rear left light cluster a bit more was used due to a slight bump :mad:
In the pic below you can see how "rust free" the girl really is :p Peeled the carpets back etc. and all that was found was a slight blemish (rust spot) by the wheel arch. Other than that she is as clean as a whistle :D (will have pics of that by next week)

@ Mr Noisy When you say bigger tires do you mean overall size or width?? ex. 245/75/16 or 235/80/16 ?
If i go with either or won't there be some rubbing in the wheel arches at close to full Flexing?
I was actually looking at the BFG A/Ts (225/75/16) today *drooools* but I don't know if they make a 225/80/16 (which will probably rub a little too
I guess :( )

What do you mean concerning bigger tire btw? Width or overall size? cause I think if I go wider or bigger the tire will rub in the fender when flexing.. or am I being a *^%#$* ?? :D

you can fit either 205 R 16 or 235/70 R 16 I fit the slightly larger.

I use mine exactly the same as yours except the boat stuff and My BFG A/T I couldnt recomend enough, excellend road manners, massive road milage and ive never been stuck in mud or snow.

But word of warning: RUST!!!!!! beaches, sand, sea are a BIG no no, you get salt water in your chassis and itll eat it slowly from the inside out...... Waxoyl is your friend!
 
Indeed mrnice. My poor little Suzuki Samurai was a victim of salt water rust :frown:
So, 235/75/16 BFG A/Ts will be better than the 225/75/16 A/Ts?? ( I hope they don't rub)..
Do you use the Waxoyl on/in the Chassis or are you talking about body?? I need to find a way (DIY) to keep my car fresh and clean but it will be a bitch to in all the nooks and crannies I am sure. :frusty:

how did you guess?

well, for starters that rear cross member doesnt have a spot of rust... that's a good way of figuring out is somewhere nice and warm

and the license plate on the estate on the background :D

You guessed right my friend... I live on the beautiful sunny island of Cyprus and got sooo many friends from England finding parts for my landy is a breeze :p Yes, Cyprus is sunny etc. but I must say I love England's natural beauty, wish I had a house there :)

Don't be fooled though. Having the car by the seaside has not been kind to the undercarriage no major rust issues but there are major signs of salt air rust on the metal parts. I will be taking care of that after next week. :frusty:

Will try to get some clear pics of the underside of the car when possible.

I guessed because he said fenders a few posts back, but mainly because nobody in the uk restores and old disco, they all get chopped up or off road modified. And yes the number plate finally gave it away.

Really nice to see one getting a proper respray :)
 
This is a very nice clean and rust free Discovery. I like the colour.

It is a shame that these example are few and far between the UK. I wouldn't mind a nice road going version myself.

Any pics of it finally finished.
 
Pics are actually not even a day old :D So, you guys are seeing what I actually do several hours and sometimes minutes later :p

Can't wait to get her done... Going to slap some BF Goodrich A/Ts or M/Ts on her and at some point get my ARBs fitted and she will be a beaut :hippie:

Have often thought the same. A proper resto would be nice. Finding a mint interior is hard enough these days. Obv there are a fair few mint cars still around though, so finding one of these and giving it a 'better than new' rebuild would be nice.

Silly pipe dreams probably, it's only a Disco :D

The interior is not bad. The issues I have with the interior is that it obviously is looking old (don't forget summer here gets hot and ruins interiors) and that the instrument cluster hood had it's screw points broken and needs changing. The steering wheel had it's "use" and looks like some strange animal chewed on the rim :p
Other than that I think some good old elbow grease and about 10 Liters of interior recondition cream will do the job. Oh, almost forgot about the Head Lining... that is suffering from the "Hang" haha, it will be changed ofc. but everything works, wipers (rear too) lights, Aircon. Heater takes a little time to get to working temp but I guess on this car it's normal; but when it does get to temp. it's really warming up well.

Anyways, blah, blah, blah... will get some pics. in asap when I get the chance.
