Been a while since I have been on here due to 18 months trouble free driving. However now have a grinding type noise from the front and I suspect IRD.
VCU and bearing changed 2 years ago, all wheel bearing correct.

If I remove front prop will this stop the noise and any further damage to IRD.

I could do without a large bill as I intend to trade the Freelander in the new year.
2001 TD4 106000 miles. VCU replaced 80000.

Help/advice thanks.

Suspect VCU bearings first.
Even if they were replaced only 2 years ago.
If they were cheap ones they won`t last.
Do a Vcu test as described on here

i could be wrong but surely by removing the prop then all your doing is stopping drive to the rear wheels and the gears and such are still working in the IRD?

Sounds to me like prop bearings if it goes away if you remove prop?

so if the IRD was damaged then removing the prop would be no point.

Forgot to add that bit. Really should get to sleep

I'll keep you updated and get the prop off after the weekend. I doubt it is the bearings as I had Land Rover VCU and bearing fitted when I replaced these items 2 years ago.
Thanks guys.

Prop off noise gone. There was a huge amount of grease splatted out from the front prop cv gaiter thing. I think this has caused the noise so need to get that replaced and try again.
What is the bit at the end of the prop the connecting bolts go through just after the gaiter.

It's a cv joint and, I believe, only comes complete with the front prop. You can get the boot from eBay seller and try repacking with cv grease but if it's run dry then it's probably knackered.

My thought too, I think I will get a new or recon one before winter and put the prop back on and if no noise that was it and at £100-150 far better than I was expecting.
