Up **** creek.
perhaps seems a strange thing to say maybe but why couldnt you have an internal snorkel?

A pipe running straight from the air intake through the bulkhead and into the cabin?

Does cold air make that much difference?

Im wanting to improve my Landy but keep it looking as factory as poss.

Within 5 miles the engine would suck all the air out of your interior and you would die;)

But would it make that much difference, temperature wise? The air from inside would cool down quite quickly with the velocity of passing through a relatively small bore pipe. Its certainly an interesting thought.

pointless but yes if you arranged it so it exited somewhere discrete? But the question has to be WHY???????? it's not like we drive bentley's or classic motors. They're tractors and badly built tractors at that!!

point taken. I was looking at snokels but do like to keep the factory look and the thought crossed my mind, I was just thinking that on my 2+ tonne brick with its old rover V8 running on a very primitive single point LPG system is it hugely gonna suffer on performance and mpg. For arguments sake the inside temp may be 21C, its been over 25C outside temp here recently and ive noticed no difference whilst driving.

But I get the principal in theory.

the most factory looking one is the safari as they blend into the body nicely IMO

if you wanted to make it look even more factory you could spray paint the snorkel to match the wing colour I suppose

I don't know about you lot but if I stand close to my snorkel with the Disco is running at tick over (2.8TGV and full width intercooler) I can hear air being gulped down as a huge rate. If I sit inside and blip the throttle I can hear the sucking sound even louder as the revs drop. God only knows what that would sound like if the intake was inside inside the cabin!!!

:eek::eek::eek::eek:

Dont get me wrong I do love the go anywhere monster truck look im just trying to keep this one as factory as poss but whilst beefing it up discreetly: underbody protection, discreet winch, internal snorkel lol, maybe colour coded chequer plate? box section sills, light guards?, HD rear bumper and as sad as this may sound a custom factory looking front bumper but much thicker with high lift jack mounts, recovery points etc. Kind of a sleeper lol.

front bumper is easy enough to do, just take your original and make the new one in sections folding each bit and welding together as you go. Time consuming but would look good! I'd raise the profile and have hidden DRL's and sunken fogs in it

I quite like the sound of a "sleeper" off road toy with air lockers and hidden winches and stuff like that. Partly cos it would draw less attention from thieving pikey scumbags but mainly cos I like the sleeper concept in general, not just on land rovers.

Lol I have a sleeper

Depends on whether you think an intercooler makes a difference or not I guess

Hmmmm....... From cabin to an intercooler (to make up for the extra warmth) into the air intake.

Got me thinking now, how hard would it be to add a turbo/supercharger?

Would there be noticable power/mpg gains?

(forget the cabin intake part for this question, Ive just digressed).

V8i Turbo, I like the sound of that.

Wont ever happen , just a pipe dream (excuse the pun!).

If you dont ask the questions then you wont know the answers, most of my ideas are hypothetical.

Plenty Rover V8s with a supercharger.

Apart from the warm air and the fact it'll depressurises the cabin in ten minutes if you by some miracle have a landy that is sealed well when all the doors and windows are shut, the induction noise will be chronic when its inside the cabin. It'll sound good but the novelty will wear off even quicker than the point where you start to find it hard to breath :p

There will also by a whiff of oil inside the cabin up trough the air intake on many engines.

To be honest a snorkel isn't going to make much difference to the look of the disco if you already have HD bumpers, winch, recovery points, hi-lift mounted somewhere, diff, steering and light guards... Doesn't sound too sleeperish to me either :p

I understand, I just slightly digressed, I think last nights Stella hadnt completely left my system.

Presumably the TDIs (turbo) suck in a lot more air than the V8s? if I blip the throttle whilst standing next to the air intake with the bonnet open there is an induction noise as it sucks in but nothing too major at all (plus if its only just entering the bulkhead would the dash muffle the noise a bit?).

Also I know what your saying about smell in the cabin, when I stall/turn off my engine there is the smell of LPG coming from the air box, wouldnt want that in the cabin.

Finally your point on it not ending up looking very sleeper like, I appreciate what your saying and I think the trick would be knowing when to stop (thats why I had question marks with the light guards/chequer plate etc) The front bumper would look almost completely standard, the rear would be something like this: Land Rover Discovery 1 300tdi HD Steel Rear Bumper - DA5647 | eBay which is almost identical to the factory one only the plastic corner caps have been made out of metal and are now part of the bumper. All the underbody protection would be painted matt black to match the underseal, And the hi lift (not that I own one) would be mounted horizontally onto the inside of the rear door (or somewhere else internally if it didnt fit), the winch would also be discreetly hidden.

TBH I dont go in water deep enough or travel on dusty roads enough to actually need a snorkel it was the 5 pints that suddenly made that random thought spring into my mind.

Big difference between blipping a throttle off load and driving a loaded Disco down any road or heaven forbid having to go up a hill:eek:

Every days a school day for me on LZ, I appreciate all of you fellas experienced knowledge and help, I unfortunately dont have this (yet!) but Im learning lots every day.

Most of this may all seem blatantly obvious to a lot of you but to me its an all new learning experience.

I only fit floors for a living but know a lot about that :)

Very true. The point I was trying to make in #9 was there is a lot of induction noise but the only time I can hear it with my external snorkle is the the revs drop otherwise the engine drowns it out. With an internal snorkle and the Disco hammering up a hil, the induction noise would be incredible. The suction would be like that scene in 007 where Goldfinger gets sucked through the plane window!!

You'd have to make sure the kids and the dog were well strapped in!!
