Intermittent starting problem

As title says really we have an intermittent starting problem on our 1.8k freelander which is a little annoying as you turn the key to start it and it just lights up and nothing else but do it a couple of times and will jump into life so i have replaced the starter with a 2nd hand one which was working for the past week and was starting 1st time every time but the car has started do the same thing again today but all connections look fine on the starter motor so any help/suggestions would be great

The ignition switch is known to fail. They seem to gum up in time causing all sorts of problems.
