Hello All,

I realise that this is a big topic, so if anyone could point me to previous directly relevant threads I would be grateful.

We're looking at buying a Td5 Discovery 2, but it has an intermittent immobiliser issue. Every now and again, it needs the EAK code to be entered to open and start the vehicle. I don't fancy that in an emergency!

I was wondering how big a job it would be to replace the BCU, as from other threads that would appear to be the culprit... maybe?

If anyone has any other suggestions, I would be grateful. Having not bought the vehicle yet, it's hard to do much testing etc. though!

Thank you in advance.

The post you tried will give you a lot of info for this.

The link does work. The attachment can be downloaded if you have a pdf reader.

Cheers

Ok. This looks interesting:

"Go to the rear sunroof ( If fitted, if not then you are looking to remove the roof lining.) In front of the rear sunroof under the roof lining by the sunroof handles is the RF receiver, it is quite common for it to fail due to corrosion on the electrical connectors or the earth point. It is often helpful to remove it clean the connections and refit. In some cases taking the unit and drying on a radiator have helped. ( See : Excerpt below on removing RF receiver )."

@neilly Do you think the RF receiver could be an issue if the problem is only occasional? It might be my first point of call.

Thank you for the useful PDF.

They do commonly cause problems and it is a fairly cheap plug and play fix if it works.

I would suggest loooking at it first and seeing if it is damp / corroded, including the earth / connector.

, Does your red light on the FOB light up even when you have problems?

Cheers

I don't know if the red light on the FOB lights up when the problem happens. I've never seen it happen; the seller is just an honest neighbour, and told us that it happens. The roof lining is slightly saggy near the front sun roof, so damp is a very likely problem. If we buy the vehicle, we may have to take a look at the sun roofs and tidy up the roof lining.
I presume the earth connection is on bolts holding the unit to the roof?

Thank you for your expert help.

That is where I would start, After that it could be the wiring, connector or the brains.

Mine uses a bolt to earth the unit, I understand the early ones might have used a connector or longer earth wire, But I have never played with one of those.

Alternatively, if it is an issue you can turn off the immobiliser if you know someone with the correct diagnostics.

Cheers

Turning off the immobiliser would be tempting, but we're looking to take the vehicle to Africa, so that might not be such a good idea!

Anyway, I'll chat to the owner and see if I can do some testing before purchase.

Thanks.

@neilly Just another quick question: If I were to fit another RF receiver, would I have to re-program it with a nanocom etc.? From what I've read so far in your useful PDF (quoted below), it looks like that wouldn't be necessary, but I thought I'd just check that I've not misunderstood. If I borrowed the RF receiver off a friend's D2, would I have to test with their key fob, or would their RF receiver talk to this vehicle's fob?

"... you have the choice of trying to find a friend who has a D2 to “borrow” their RF receiver and see if this works as it is a plug and play unit or buy one. Part number is YWY000080 ( BUT it may not resolve your problems) ..."

Sorry about all the questions. Electronics are nice ... when they work – and only then! In the mean time, they're confusing.

It does not need programming, as said it is plug and play so you should be good to go. If you have a friend with a D2 then you could also try putting your rf receiver in their car and using their fob to try and open their car.

You would use your key fob to open your car, once their receiver is fitted to your car.

Cheers
