Just been reading a thread with complaints regarding AF and these issues. thought Id share a few tips for getting your insurance costs down.

Didnt want to get the thread more OT, so thought id start a new one.

AF are not unique in charging for amendments to policies, and in fact their £25 is on the cheaper end, other companies are £45 (Kwik Fit being one, Octagon another) and some as high as £65.

Regarding recovery after an accident, if you have breakdown cover with recovery, most of these also offer accident recovery too, indeed the AA and RAC do as long as you have recovery on your breakdown policy, you can also save yourself £25-40 a year on your insurers motor legal, as the AA and RAC both offer this as part of their cover too :)

Another bizzare little trick is choose a high voluntary excess, and then take out excess protection insurance, I chose a £1000 voluntary excess, which knocked me £180 off my insurance, I then "protected" this with another insurance for £40, so saving £140 on my insurance.
If you didnt know (as I didnt for many years) excess is only applied if you make a claim for your vehicle on your insurance, ie theft, glass isnt under voluntary for most policies and stays at the £50/100 Third party claims there is no excess for, neither is getting your vehicle repaired by your insurer whilst fighting a claim, although it would become payable if it is decided that you are at fault wholley or partly.
Check the excess protection policy, some require you to pay out and claim back, others it is paid straight to your insurers, the latter being more common.

Also dont assume that mods will affect your insurance adversly, and that adding them on will cause an issue, I added mods to mine during the year, and rang my insurer to let them know, they added a note to my account, for free, pn the proviso that these mods would not be insured till next renewal (ie it would not increase my payment if I had to claim, if I wanted to do this, it would cost the £25 amendment, but as they were not performance enhancing, or considered risk increasing they just noted it)
When it came round to renewal, my insurance came down because of the mods as I was then an "enthusiast"

It can also help reduce your premium by adding one or more experianced drivers as named drivers, I save a small amount by adding my mum & dad as named drivers (I'm 33, but still save around £25 by adding them) they may never drive it, but who cares if I can save a few ££

I dont profess to be an isurance expert, but im all for saving a few quid if I can :)
