My 1986 year LR90 N/A is in Insurance Group 6.
My 2002 year LR Defender 90 TD5 is in Insurance Group 12.

I imagine that the improved engine performance of the TD5 would account for a higher Group rating but an increase from 6 to 12, for what is ostensibly the same vehicle, seems incredulous.

In insurance terms, the labour cost of repairing a 1986 vehicle or a 2002 vehicle is probably very similar - the cost of body parts are probably the same.

Why then, can anybody tell me, is there such a gaping disparity between the two vehicles? (My insurance company couldn't!)

Hi Buck, I am no expert on this but I would guess that it is a mixture of the better performance and the fact that a 2002 landrover is more desirable than a 1986.

I may well be wrong and I am sure I will be told so if I am.

Hi there.....insurance groups factors in the capability to speed, cost of labour, cost of parts, likelihood of theft, area of where the vehicle will park (both work and home, garage, driveway or road side) and of course drivers' age, past records etc etc....

How a 1986 90 deffers to a 2002 90....I can only agree with dopey that are down to likelihood to theft and vehicle's performance....

hope this help..

Thank you Dopey and King. I now feel somewhat reassured that I'm not being hoodwinked by my insurance company. However, I did a Google search and found a site specifying a LR90 TD5 as Insurance Group 10 vs. my insurance company stating Group 12.

BTW, Sureterm prides itself as a 4x4 specialist insurer. I used confused.com and was quoted £228 by Zurich (my current insurer) for fully comp, protected NCD, etc..... only £1 more than Sureterm. Think I'll stay with Zurich.

Do sureterm offer you anything extra like off road cover or anything like that? Also have you done anything to your 90 to make it more desirable? Like I said I am no expert just giving you some ideas.
