hey ive got a 2002 td5 disco and it s giving starting and cutting out probs . first the # 5 injector plunger spring broke in 2 places . so i fixed that (had another injector i knew was good ) put it in and had to crank it a bit but it started andd reved great took it for a drive and cuts out .and wont start . towed it home and changed fuel filter and rechecked connections , then injector loom changed it still no start . so i just started to crank the engine for a while and holding the throttle down and it started reved good whent to idle then misfires slightly and cuts out . diid that a few times and still wont /cant drive any ideas ??

i know you all say it needs coding but i changed a new head years ago with new injectors and never coded anything worked fine and sold it still works fine . so i realy dont think coding is the prob. could the fuel pump be cutting in and out . cause it seems like an air lock on the 300tdi .

well i changed the fuel pump .still didnt work . changed the injector solenoid on the injector and used the original .still didnt work . changed back the injector loom and it still doesnt work. i think i will have to get the codes read and see what comes up .

yes its working now . well as it turns out the injector i thought was good was bad having been sat for months it was sticking and sending air back in the fuel system causing the cutting out (air lock) i just swaped it for another and all was good . and for all those that say injectors need coding they dont cause it works great just as the one i did years ago .

The engine may run without coding but the injectors wont be working efficiently and possibly wont last as long as they could.
The injector codes are not relative to what position they fit the engine. Each injector is calibrated at the factory and each one is slightly different in terms of spray pattern, release timing, and internal pressure build up, etc. The codings tell the ECU exactly what the injector will do so that it can adjust the solenoid timing accurately. Non coded injectors, or the wrong colour ones (you cant use early black/blue EU2 injectors in a later EU3 spec engine), cause all sorts of problems from diesel knock to cam shaft wear and terminal injector failure. Ever wondered why the injector spring broke?

i have know idea but it was the original injector from factory the engine has only 40,000 miles never opened . he previous td5 i did at least 4 years ago new head with 5 new injectors no coding used every day worked very well and still runs perfectly the guy i sold it to has no probs and the engine has never been opened for anything else since.

I'm not doubting what you say and if its running OK then leave it alone.

For the short amount of time and little cost it takes to code the injectors I'd get them done. I've just fitted a complete new engine but retained my old ECU as it has a modified map. The engine fired first time but I'm not using it in anger until I code the new injectors. I was going to fit the old injectors and avoid recoding but the old engine was an early 10P EU2 spec and the new one is a later 15P EU3 spec so the old injectors are not compatible.

The EU2 spec engines run injector pressures of about 2200 bar but the EU3 spec engines use injector pressures of 3000 bar. This is all done by modified injector bodies and cam profiles hence why they are not interchangeable.
