I've worked out that my 300 TDi is giving me 21 mpg on average. To try and improve on this I am about to blank off the EGR, clean out the intercooler and fit a decat pipe. My question is, is there anything else I should be doing to the vehicle to help improve MPG?

try some veg oil mate its worked on mine:D
better mpg and better all round performance:cool:
loads of threads on here about it
an as raz sez take ya tame there not meant to race
you shoulda got something a bit smaller for that:rolleyes:

I have a '98 TDi300 auto and I'm getting between 33-36 mpg.

You either have something drastically wrong with the car or you are driving it too hard.

It's useful to remember that a Disco TDI weighs roughly 2000kgs and has an engine of 113-120 bhp (depending on model). That means a power to weight ratio of approx 57bhp per ton. By comparison a Ford Focus TDCI 115 weighs approx 1200kgs and has a ratio of about 101bhp per ton !!!!!

This means that IF you are used to normal family car performance, a Disco will either seem dreadfully slow and/or you will need to drive it sooooh hard that it will eat fuel.

Cruising at anything over about 60mph in a Disco is a recipe for low mpg due to brick-like aerodynamics.

May I suggest that before you do any more to your vehicle, you considor carefully your driving style, to see if any of the comments above apply.

Incidently, I've just blanked of the EGR in my car and it has improved the mpg or performance. (you can't have both now can you!)

Mine is de catted and de EGRd and I get 26 round town and 32 on a run. Watch tyre pressures. A mate with one like mine has had a K&N fitted and had the pump tweaked and reckons he gets 40mpg. The handbook actually claims 47mpg at a steady 56.......... talk about fairy stories!

Thanks for the replies everyone. I can assure you my driving style is not the problem here. Since originally calculating the mpg I have ensured I have driven steady and not too fast to try and improve on 21mpg but all to no avail. I spoke to Allisport today and they suggested it might be a faulty lift pump or fuel pump. I will carry out the mods I have planned and look at the mpg figures to see if anything has improved. My Disco is a 300 TDi with an auto box and a 2" lift. I would expect this to decrease my mpg but not by that much. I'll let you know how I get on.

Must be something wrong with it 21mpg is crap. I do better than than in me 110 with a sad old td and big mud tyres on. My old 200tdi disco did 30ish mpg.

I never got above about 21mpg on my 300 auto. Good luck!

i put new air filter in every three month new oil an fuel filter every six month
you wouldn't belive how black they get in such a short time:eek:
change ya filters mate
you know it makes sense:rolleyes:

Mine's an auto Tdi 300 and I'm getting well over 30mpg all day long. On a run nearer to 40 - but I don't go above about 60mph. De-EGR'd, viscous fan off and well maintained, new filters every 6 months.

I wonder how much difference that viscous fan makes. Even thoughit's suposed to decouple, it still turns. Recently found mine wasn't engaging at all, so replaced the viscous unit just in case (I go abroad a lot and it gets hot over there) and the motor is now definitely slower to warm up.

I live "abroad" and I never have overheating problems with either of my de-fanned Discos.

Hi,

ive not had my disco long, but i think mines great on fuel,

ive gone from a 1.6 fiesta to the disco and my disco is LOADS better than my fiesta, or atleast it feels it

1 Question though, What about these Hiclones?

do they actually work, im thinking about getting some? along with K&N filter, and giving her a full service, removing EGR too

No they don't after a very long debate on this forum Hiclone: Do these really work? - Page 37 - Land Rover UK Forums They finally got Hi-Clone to put em to the test and put them on a rolling road, Dyno tester. the difference with Hiclones was 3hp improvement, less than 2% increase. you get a better result if you took the viscous fan off. Below is the printout of the test.

Someone told me you can take the viscous fan off and (if you have an ES) you can use the 2 fans from the A/C to do the cooling (they actually did cut in when I had overheating problems with the HGF) Anyone else heard of this?
