Never seen Whitworth or BSF in there.

It's been a long time since Whitworth or BSF was used on cars. But Unified (UNF and UNC) was the common standard though the fifties, sixties and seventies. Using AF spanner sizes.
 
My Halfords set has both. However it is so old it doesn't even have Halfords written on it. Bit of a bugger really because they wouldn't exchange the socket that split - not that they had a six point to exchange it with.

Must be a bloody old socket set to have Whitworth and BSF in it. Maybe Metric/AF mix or an earlier AF/ BSF/Whit mix but that would be a very old set going back to the early sixties. :D
 
Yep me too. I have a Stanley 1/2" set that has both metric and imperial single hex. Bought it in the very early 90's and still going strong, the only thing that has failed is the original plastic box.
 
My case (the little lock snaps) although the actual box has no guarantee, they still replaced it for free, I have used that set so much the chrome has started to rub off, and you can see the copper underneath it
 
Yeah Metric and AF for unified thread stuff i can understand but Whit and BSF are long gone on vehicles. Only thing i ever use BSF or BA spanner sizes on is my Myford lathe.
though the track rod brackets on disco and defenders diffs remained bsw up to a few years back
 
Don't know about that James. But there has not been much Whitworth or BSF stuff around for a very long time. Odd thing here and there maybe.
true they were just a hang over ,series were imperial apart from the very early ones before going metric at the beginning of the 80s except the gear box and diff housing bolts for the brackets
 
I have a decent fully comprehensive set from Halfords, done everything i have needed it for.



That with a good couple of sets of combi spanners in both imp and met.....

Only spanner I have had to borrow was a sodding big one for the defenders steering drop arm nut..... Cant remember the size now though!

34mm,sockets better
 
Unf and unc still alive and current on american machinery, no metric unless parts imported as original country and not made for usa parts.
Most popular unf bolts ie 3/4 match metric ie 19mm in socket sizes.
11/16 is 17mm. 9/16 is 14mm etc.
Only real problem is smaller ones, 3/8 and 10 mm don't match etc.
That is popular and near enough match, not perfect match.
