I've owned this discovery for 18 months and I've never had any lights come on the dash until today. I've started it up as usual, pulled it from one side of the road to the other gone to start it and now I see this... DSC_0722.JPG

With a red key flashing.

I've ripped the dash apart but there's nothing where the spider is meant to be according to YouTube.
Any ideas? If I ram the key in it'll half turn the engine before the immobiliser kicks in.. :(

I had a similar experience with mine, a couple of years ago. Drove into town and parked, when I got back to the car, put the key in and got a key symbol on the dash and no start. After a few attempts it did start and I drove home thinking its one of those "characterful" things. Next day same again, thankfully outside my house. I called a mate of mine, who owns an indie 4x4 garage, and he plugged his laptop in and said it was a dodgy key fob. He got me a new one, not sure if he had to let the BCU pair with it, but Ive had no problems since.
I know this is all a bit vague, I am colour blind so have always stayed away from colour coded things, like electrics.

I've never seen the red led or the key symbol light up before regardless of the key position though

Important is what year is the vehicle and what engine/gearbox, EGR or not ... too bad you stripped the dash simply based on youtube without knowing first which kind of immobiliser you have cos there are 4 types with different setups, the spider is just one of them so IMO you didnt find the spider cos you have other kind of immobiliser

It's a 98 manual with a manual injection pump, as I said iv

I had that problem. Remote key I believe. I removed the whole immobiliser and fitted a central locking module with two new fobs for a tenner off flea bay.
There is a company I've used before who are very good with regards a new fob or bypass. I'll post the name when I remember

Used these before and really impressed. I think with your model they send a new fob with a green programmer that plugs into your OBD2 socket. It then pairs the key to your car. Unplug and away you go.

Having no fancy key fob to mess with (gone several owners back), and no desire to dig into the dashboard (at the time - done it since, of course) I ran a new wire from the ignition out to the fuel solenoid.

Did yer get any further with this pal?

After many many hours of head scratching it's all sorted thanks, I ran a replacement wire from the key to the starter motor and attacked the module on the injector pump with a hammer and a screwdriver and rewired the fuel cut off solenoid Tiz now starting and running fine. I still have no idea what caused the immobiliser to spring into life but it's now redundant....
