Last week whilst speaking with an ADI qualified driving instructor he mentioned that it is illegal for a driver to be wearing a Hi-viz jacket, a front seat passenger to be wearing a hi-viz top or one to be visible draped over the top of an empty front seat.

I have tried looking on the internet for confirmation of this but not had much luck, does anybody know a good website to look on?

what a crock, most of the delivery drivers on the road wear hi viz while driving, what about when the coppers are driving in the motorway patrol cars or the highways agency do-gooders or cop wannabe's, they all wear em. i have been stopped loads of times by the ministry and police (usually coming out of the tunnels in liverpool) for spot checks and it's never been commented on. think someone might be takin the **** there:D

i've been told by an " expert " that it's illegal to have your sidelights on while driving, yet some manufacturers wire the lights so that you can't drive without them on

That's bollocks 100% for certain. They even recommend bikes to have to have them on. And there's a campaign to have them made compulsory on cars. which a lot of bikers are fighting against. On the grounds that if everybody has them on all the time it will make bikes less conspicuous

This is simply not true as it states in the Highway Code, 113 'You MUST ensure all sidelights and rear registration lights are lit between sunset and sunrise.'

Re the above, may I suggest you ask the afore mentioned person to quote chapter and verse ,or was it just something he conjured up?

I think it's slightly misquoted.

It's illegal to dive after dusk and before sunrise with only your sidelights on. If lights are required that means headlights are needed. side lights are really parking lights.
It's not going to be illegal to have your side lights on, but the police could try and argue that if you're driving around dusk or daybreak, and you've got your side lights on you acknowledge lights are needed, and you've failed to do so properly. It would be really hard for them to prove the point in court so I can't see them doing it.

Donkeys years ago "they" were going to introduce a law where you couldn't drive with just your sidelights on, you had to have your headlights on as well. Which is why my 1989 90 has a special gizmo that puts your headlights on at a reduced voltage when you put your sidelights on. "They" decided this law was bollox and dint introduce it. So it's still legal, as far as I'm aware, to drive with just your side lights on after dark, this might only be the case in built up areas with street lighting. But then it's donkeys years ago that I last read the highway code an I might be talkin out my arse.

An you know what an expert is don't you. An Ex is a has been an a Spert comes out yer knob end.

My understanding is that it is legal to drive on side lights at night provided there is suitable viability, such as street lights. This is an old law that hasn't been updated.
A newer law says that is you use lights during daylight because of reduced visibility, such as rain or fog, you must use headlights, driving on sidelights in those circumstances is illegal.
Before anyone jumps on me, I am not claiming the above is sensible!

Ah well I dunno neither it's all down to common sense reely int it, I spose the highway code will be on the tinternetweb somewhere won't it.

I always get an irrational urge to drive into the daft ****s that drive with their fog lights on cos they think it makes them look cool.

LAWS IS GETTING WEIRDER BY THE DAY

Just found on the GT40 forum.....

Just a word of caution for those travelling down to the Classic Le-Mans in July. As from the 1st July it is compulsory to carry a fluorescent jacket. Since the Classic is in July you will all need one. Standard 90 euro fine if not carrying one. This must be carried inside the car not in the luggage compartment.
It is also advisable to carry one for your passenger. This is not compulsory, but the minute they get out of the car (assuming you have broken down) they will need one.
You have BEEN WARNED!!.

Can you confirm, Slob?
