Ignition lock wont turn

have yer tried a good squirt of wd40 and giving it a good wriggle (wheel and key together)?
that might get it moving, but I'd still replace the lock asap.

Is there any pressure being exerted on the lock? Try wiggling the steering wheel as you turn the key to release the pressure.

If the lock is worn out It will begin to stick. I have never changed a barrel on a landrover but have on a lot of other cars. The basic principle is the same. The easy way to remove the lock is to turn the key and then push a tiny release pin in on the side of the barrel's outer cylinder.

If the key wont turn it leaves 3 realistic options.

1) use a slide hammer to remove the barrel. It usually sheers the locking pin but CAN damage the housing.

2) use a small punch and a hammer to tap the sheer bolts round which hold the whole lock mechanism in place and change the complete assembly.

3) CAREFULLY drill out the lock.

I would go for the slide hammer option and if it does break the casing I would use the hammer and punch to change the lot.

The fourth method is to try and drill out the locking pin. This is not normally possible on an ignition lock due to the position of the hole in relation to the rest of the casing. If you try and drill on an angle the chances are you will slot the hole and any new barrel will just slop about or fall out.
 
Same thing happened on my 300, car was stuck for hours, did the wheel wiggle and the key, left an hour or two then tried again and eventually it worked.

This happened alot and slowly got worse, in the end sprayed inside the lock with magic spray ( WD40 ) and its never stuck since.

WD40 isn't good for locks as it traps dirt and dust in the lock mechanism. A good quality graphite based lubricant is much better for freeing and lubricating lock mechanisms. Even rubbing a key with grapite based pencil lead will help.

No you don't have to. You can either order a replacement of the original lock from a main stealer (assuming the lock is the original) or you can get a locksmith to either make you up a new one or rebuild your old one using new springs and tumblers.
 
Excellent, right ill get on to it after the bank hols, theres a main stealer less than a mile from me home so ill go see him and see what trouble i can get meself into. Thanks to all for the help

Sometimes the reason the ignition wont turn is due to a worn key. Before you knock 7 bells out of your cylinder, try your spare or invest a few quid in a new blank just to see if it turns. If your key is the original, when not in the car its banging around with your coins in your pocket and the profile wears down (just look at your front door key)Hope this helps
 
I have the key not turning in the ignition problem now and again usually I just move the steering wheel slightly and the key will then turn but if the steering wheel is locked not sure :confused:

It sounds like the steering wheel IS locked when that happens. Next time it does it wiggle the steering wheel and you should be able to feel it hitting on each side of the locking mechanism.
