Anyone got any tips for sortin a broken ingnition lock barrel?? I cant get mine to turn with the key (tiz the right key an all).

the barrel looks as tho its popped out a bit but will push back in when the key is inserted, the key goes right in up to the plastic bit which i dunt think is right.... if it didnt have a steerin lock i'd not be too fussed as i could just jump the starter and shift it oot me shed but the big smelly lump is stuck right in the way, drivin straight forward will just run it straight into me scrap heap...... im startin to warm to that idea tho :D

had a look at takin off the whole steerin lock but its got headless bolts to stop pikey's takin it off i guess....

mine did that as well, wd40 into it and work it back and forward, you can centre dab or chip the sheer bolts round with a chissel

as above...they come off easy with a tap witha chisel, and you may have a little black bit at the end that comes off you can then put a screwdriver in and start it, or if its like the 90 it can be wired twoc style....

i'll just have to install a switch and button like me lightweight had, none of this key ****e!! :D maybee's i'll get lucky an some dafty'll steal it! !

You can get an ignition lock from the breakers complete with keys, far easier than modifying it, and fit it with normal bolts so you can get it off easy. The thiefs dont take them off, ever, they just force them, so if you ever gets stuck again 13mm spanner and its off.

They are only around £25 for the complete assembly new and come complete with 2 keys.

If the series ones are anything like the defender ones........ remove the 2 small phillips screws holding the ignition switch to the rear of the lock assembly.
When you then pull the switch off there is a 3" long 'remote' rod that is turned by the rear of the lock when you turn the key in the ignition and in turn turns the ignition switch. Grip this rod with a pair of mole grips and stick the key in the lock. If you wiggle both the remote rod and key at the same time, generally the steering lock will release.

the one on mine mashed the innerds up and the key snapped, best to cut off the steering lock with a dremel or something, then take the switch off the back and start the thing with a screwdriver

cheers for the pointers!

after a bit of grief i got it sorted, gave it a spray & bash but that failed so removed the switch off the back of the barrel and drilled out the bolts on the steering lock, sorted!!

....of course in true land rover fashion after annihilating the thing i put the key back in the lock and it turned sweet as........

on the plus side i found my newly constructed pugeot 106/tetly bitter eggzorst worked a treat, no more carbon monoxide poisoning for me!!!! :D
