Hi I have a 1997 P38 DSE.
When I turn off the ignition and remove the key then open the front door, the message centre says the ignition key is in. This then means that I can't use the remote to lock it. I use the key and get a double beep (shriek) from the alarm. I can open it using the remote. It happens about 50% of the time, the rest of the time there is no problem. Anyone any ideas of what I can check or change?

There is a sensor around the ignition switch that detects the presence of the key, it seems this is giving spurious readings in your case.

If I was in your position I would disconnect the wiring, remove it and give it a tap on the bench. Check the wiring and reconnect. I've honestly no idea if that would do anything but it's what I would do before replacing anything. Also I suppose some sort of lever could be sticking in the ignition barrel, maybe worth a squirt of WD40 in there and give it a good jiggling?

Hi jeffers i have the very same problem half the time no problem .The other time( ignition key in) and not being able to use remote with the alarm beeping.

Thanks ianmjdun tried the wd-40 like you said it seems to have worked .I think the bit inside the barrel must have been sticking and thats why the computor was thinking the keys were still in ignition so fingers crossed.

I know that it seems a little bizare, but I've had no more trouble since I put a new battery on! If it does come back i'll try the wd40.
Cheers,
Dave :)

Hello, I have also had this problem with my current 1999 DSE (my previous 1995 4.0 SE did the same thing! The good old WD40 seems to have done the trick! Thanks for the advice Ianmjdun. Cheers, Kenny

Went back into the RR today - all ok for the first few stop/starts BUT now back to the same message ! I'm going to try more WD40 - please let me know how you get on allsorts. Wonder why the WD40 works atall??? Cheers.

There is a microswitch in the ignition barrel mechanism which detects the presence of the key.

Try using some proper lock lubricant, which might last longer than WD40.

I eventually had to get a replacement barrel, which surprisingly wasn't too expensive!

hi does any one know where i can get a blank key cut for a 02 [L3220] range rover cut? dont want to pay £200 ,i can buy a blank key in the US for £50..cheers

WD40 s temporary. A better solution is to clean it with quick drying elctronic contact cleaner (or spray brake cleaner) and followup with silicone spray or graphite. I personally use a graphite that has a carrier fluid for peneration

wd40 is great stuff but when it dries it leaves a residue and with the friction of the key goin in and out all the ****e sticks to the lock parts and ends gummed up , as someone else says ust the graphite powder for lubbing your lock

Have just tried the WD40 in ignition lock to cure the "Key still in ignition" problem and it worked first time. This on a year 2000 Range Rover.

Why bother reconnecting it?

Curiously,
