hello,

I would like to identify my IRD box, that to find out if the box is the original one (1998), or if this is a later (better?) one. I don't have the full service history, so I don't know if this is still the original one. Does anyone know how I can determine the age of the IRD? The serial number on my IRD is: 7891220631

It is a FL 1998, 3 door, 1.8 petrol

Speak to Bell Engineering or Ashcroft Transmissions?

I've not come across a resource that enables you to answer this question.

I believe the ratio change was introduced from 2001 model year but am not 100% on this!!

Thanks, I will speak to bell next week.

I removed the pinion, and on the top, it says R21-38, looking on the internet, that should correspond with 1.80 ratio, and that ratio was used in the "new" IRD's , after 2001.

Sounds like you are nearly there!! Let us know the outcome?

Bell Engineering mailed me that the pinion wheel ratio was not been changed after 2001/2002, but the main shaft ratio. Can't see that from the outside.

Still try to get more information about the serial numbers on the IRD:confused:

AFAIK they are all the same, all the modifications were done to the differential units.

Hi Freelaner, Aschcroft send me an answer; the diffs are unchanged (although the ratio's are not changed) The change of ratio is done in the IRD. The mainshaft is different.

cheers, i got it the wrong way round

damn this excuse for a memory i've got ;)

Is the casing the same for both types?

I think so, although the partnumbers are different:
Old: TAG100030 (old ratio)
Newer: TAG100210 (new ratio???)
Newest: TAG000230(Z) (new ratio)

(source: http://www.allbrit.de/UNI.cfm?PAGE=838692&SPRACHE=EN )

Still an old unit can be reconditioned with the new ratio schaft.

I didn't look at my IRD if I can find one of those numbers. I will try to find the numbers. Does not seem easy to determine the age of the IRD.

Talked with Ken, from Bell Engineering, and he stated that it is probably not possible to determine the age or year of built of the IRD from the outside. Only if there are still labels on it. So I guess the serial numbers are not really registered, like with the Defender transfer boxes for example.

Recondition it with the newer parts in order to be sure then?

I am new on here having just bought a 1999 Di model last week (and enjoying it)

I too have been trying to find out about IRD serial numbers and found this on the Polish Rover site (below). Basically someone was looking on ebay for washers for their IRD and found that the ones offered by one retailer could only be used on later IRD units from 2001 - and then gives a serial number (only 6 digits though - posisbly the last 6?) Don't know whether this is sound or not but just thought I would post as it is perhaps worth noting? Gareth

żyteczna informacja , te podkładki są P&P dla IRD od rocznika 2001 - dokładnie dla aut wyprodukowanych od sierpnia '01 o numerach seryjnych IRD 251.502 i wyższych.

Kod:
For the cars from manufact. date September 2001 on (IRD serial number 251.502 upwards)
For cars with an earlier manuf. date and IRD serial numbers downwards 251.502 this washers kit can NOT be USED.

Dla starszych trzeba je lekko zeszlifować - ok 3 -5 mm do grubości 0.5-0.7 mm. _________________

I read in a magazine that the earlier IRD at 100 kph in 5th gear did 3150 rpm,and the later 2700 rpm.I do not know if this applies to a manual or a auto.I Have a Xedi year 2000 with a later IRD replacement and in 5th it revs at 2700.IT is a manual

What er the last six numbers of your IRD? My car is from 98 and the last six numbers are: 220631

That sounds like a big difference, how did you measure that?

I thought they only altered the gearing for the rear drive output on the later unit not the entire gearing.

The ratio was updated within the IRD but that difference seems too great to me. Is that source of info reliable?
