was under the defender earlier attempting to fit my steering guard, when i noticed quite a considerable oil leak, coming from an object i am unable to identify.
it is connected to the steering arms on the left hand side of the steering arms.

can anyone name this object?

is it not the steering box bolted to chasis on drivers side

just typed it into google images, and that is definately the item.

anyone know what could be wrong with it, and also if this is on its way out, could this cause a scraping noise when turning right?

just had another look, and the oil has a reddish tinge to it, what does this mean.
could really do without spending 200 on another pump :(

check the bleed bolt on the top of the box isn't loose first.

If that's ok get somebody to start the landy and turn the steering so you can look to see where the leak is coming from.

no its not the pump its the main box thats leaking is the level low as oil is thin and spreads aound alot, run engine and get someone to turn steering wheel and see where leak is, be careful tho.... could be round lower link or thro large hex bolt on end

so am i right in thinking:

check bleed screw on top of box, if thats not tight, do it up :)

if it is tight, then get someone to start the engine and turn the wheel onto full lock etc. locate where the leak is coming from, and then report back :)

if the steering box has gone/ leaking this is normally when the seals on the box fail due to age and yes the scraping noise could be due to the worn steering box too as they say check oil and see if its coming fron the pipes into the steering box or the box itself
