I'm about to lose use of my perma-borrow Autolink system, realise I'm knackered without a diags tool moving forward (MOT tomorrow!)

Seeing lots of traffic about the Gap IID tool, which to be honest is more money than I'd want to spend at the moment, but the iCarSoft LR 3 looks like it does exactly the same job and not rely on bluetooth which in itself can be problematic.

Does anyone actually have a proper pro's/con's of each??

I believe the icarsoft will only read and clear codes, I have the Gap and not only does it read and clear codes but you can go into the CCF files and change things to suit you such as drive away locking, wipers to intermittent when stop at traffic lights and loads more so GAP all the way yes it costs more but well worth it.

They both see and read the same thing on every system, the IID can programme things which the Icarsoft cannot, but at 4 times the price you have to ask yourself, do you need to programme things?
I had an Icarsoft for a year as could not afford the IID, I was pretty impressed at what it could do, plus I sold it for what I paid for it! so you could go that route if needed.
My Icarsoft was the basic LR model, not one of the newer fancy ones you can get now, so not sure if they are different machine or just different case?

I now have the IID and the bluetooth has not given one moments trouble.

I think is the one I had, note the price compared to the V3!

They also do an even cheaper one.

+1 here for GAP too.

The blue tooth has never been an issue and its handy if you want to be out of the car to see what's happening.

Save a little longer?

I have an icarsoft and GapIID. They are both really good, however, I would probably go for Gap if you only have an LR. As has been suggested, you can go into the CCF and configure the car which is really useful if you want to change options, program additional keys, install a tow bar, delete an EGR (requires an additional cost update from another manufacturer (so I'm told, I would never condone that... probably)).

Gap has more control over things like air suspension tests and calibration as well as others like the Fuel Burning Heater etc. I have several cars so it makes sense for me to have iCarSoft but for vehicle specific stuff you'll need vehicle specific stuff I guess.
Not sure what your concern with BT is though, never had an issue myself.

IID can also change the speedo reading by changing the tyre circumference, not something most people would do, but handy nevertheless to keep the speedo accurate if you should change tyre sizes.

Why not 'invest' in a suitable laptop and install SDD on it? I run one myself, other than reinstalling every 90 days (which you can easily do with a backup image) it works 'as expected' - there is a CCF edit option, I found a command-line code generator which works perfectly, the only thing I'm reticent about using it for (as SDD had a habit of not always playing nicely with a genuine version) is programming new or existing modules. With a cable and a laptop, it cost me under £100.

Edit - that may only be an option for later models...

I'm interested... definitely interested in having SDD do you have a link or some more details please? I probably don't need it but I just love this stuff.

One of the best things I have done is enabled the digital speedo in the cluster and set it to the same as the trip computer which I change to L/100km thus giving me a KMH readout when abroad. I don't spend as much time as I'd like to in France but we are so close to the channel tunnel it makes sense for me, usually it is in MPH of course. Bit of a shame it's not the same dimensions as the gear indicator but I forgive LR for this oversight.

Where did you source the cable?

There's a thread on here with most of the links needed, the supplier I bought the cable from no longer lists it but the one here https://www.cardiagtool.co.uk/jlr-mangoose-sdd-pro-high-quality.html looks the same and is only £2.67 more...
The Laptop I got from fleabay is a Panasonic CF-54 (£63), I installed Windows 7 x64 and updated the stuffing out of it, then disabled updates so as not to mess with SDD. This thread https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-ro...ted-feel-free-to-add-experiences-help.365631/ has all the links to patches etc. I would add that the best thing to do is get it all working, then run a full 'restore-capable' backup, as SDD will start to complain then progressively shut down functions as you approach 90 days without updating, at that point, just restore and you have another 90 days. It works just as I remember SDD - which isn't always intuitive, for most situations, measurement or diagnosis (with symptoms) is the best route, if you just want to clear DTC's, then select PDI, there's a menu item easily accessible.

I really like stuff like that Bob.
Just goes to show no matter how complicated a car someone somewhere comes up with a good idea to fix and run it for significantly less.

You can do that of a Ford Focus without any diagnostics
