I was charged £30 for coolant on a clutch change

I recentley had a complete clutch kit fitted to my 1999 freelander (costing £688) of which £30 was for coolant. Was this part of fitting the clutch, ie, would the radiator need to be removed? help me , have i been ripped off?
 
If i am wrong i am sure someone will correct me...

Does the coolant not circulate through the IRD - ?

This needs to be removed to change clutch....
 
I agree with Soloby Rob, £688 bill and he's questioning £30 ... :hysterically_laughi
 
The IRD will have to be removed to get the gearbox out so the cooling system will need to be drained. Given the amount of work involved I think £688 all in ain't far off the mark. Glad its not me though. Quite how they justify £30 for coolant beats me.
 
i thank rusty mark and darmain for their replies, the only ones with brains, unsure what all the cloth ear jibes where about by the others who obviously aint got a clue
 
Just so you can check what you have been charged for, in order to remove the IRD, drive shafts and gearbox, the IRD and gearbox oil will need to be drained. You will probably also have been charged for two oils, which will be correct as the IRD and gearbox use different grades.

I had nothing futher to offer than what had already been said, only the price of the coolant from a main dealer, which may or may not be relevant. Perhaps if you had reached for your owners manual instead of the reply in anger button, you could have looked up the coolant capacity of your engine, multiplied the figure given in litres by £8.95 and found whether the amount you were charged for coolant was in the right ball park.

however, you plough your own furrow and live your life as you see fit.
 
Your right to use the main dealer stuff. Far easier and less risk. Freelanders use the OAT stuff. That’s if you already have the main dealer stuff in your motor.

When mixing different anti freeze makes you stand a good chance of blocking your engine. You can’t mix most anti freeze, as they contain chemicals which react to chemicals in other anti freeze. The solution is to buy the same stuff, or thoroughly wash out the water system. If they don’t allow mixing, they’ll sludge up the coolant system.

Forgot to say, cost of clutch replacement at a main dealer is £900 ish. Not had one done, but other FL drivers who know me have told me this was what they were quoted. I then advise them the cost when I replaced my auto and they pass out.

Methinks newbie is a little too lazy to look up his owners manual & to moan about £30 on a £600+ bill is hilarious. That's why you got partially ridiculed, & I say partially cause folks went easy on you this time.

Oh & if you aint happy about the extra £30 then why oh why didn't you question it before paying up. Your Garage would have explained & you wouldn't have come on here sobbing to us, then whining when we don't all go "there there".:amen:
 
Go easy on the newbie comrades ;)

Afterall, it's LR's fault for overcomplicating the drive system with the inter-cooler.

If the garage knew what they were at then, they would have re-used the coolant, assuming it's fit for purpose.

If they were really smart, then there is a way round draining the system ;)
 
thanks for that info, ive looked at my recepit and theyve charged me £18 for gearbox oil. no mention of IRD oil.
 
ah, im getting this now, im coming across as a thicko newbie, but i am not.(please read in a nice tone), my original enquiry was questioning the use of coolant as was confused as to where the radiator came into the picture(cant spell akwayshun!!!). And the freelander haynes manual is as useful as our government-not useful at all, so ive cut out a 4"x4" square out of each page and use it for hiding my stash. Im confused as to what the orange oats thing is and ploughing my own furrows!! im not from norwich, im from fishy grimsby.But thanks again for all the information, and of course, for being gentle. The oats thing is just advanced technology coolant. Designed to a spec that’s preferable to your Freelander. Said to be better than using normal coolant due to it's chemical make up.
