Disco 2 I need to stop reading about LR's. (TD5 Oil Pump Bolt)

The more I read the more scary it gets. I need to stop reading about issues people have had.

Mine is a TD5 99' bought on a whim 3 years ago with 133k on the clock. No service history and I'm the 8th owner (What the hell was I doing?). Now it runs fine. No major issues other than sealing the sun roofs and removing the ACS properly. I have it serviced once a year and it's just had a service at 168k. No big issues and I love the big thing.

Then I read about the Oil Pump bolt. Was this as a prolific issue as the tinternet states? It looks to have stayed put so far but now i'm curious/worried. If it can make it to the next service interval I'll get it checked. I can't really afford to get it done at the mo.

Are there any signs to look for or does it just pop out, drop the sprocket and pain ensue? I had the injectors calibrated a few thousand ago and the top end looked oily and fine so I assume its working as it should for now. Can't hear any odd noises...well no more than usual.

I understand until it is checked there are no guarantees but I'm hoping that with having done so much mileage she'll last a bit longer. :)
 
youll know when it does go as oil pressure light will appear, fit a new one for peace of mind not a hard job, made easier by jacking chassis as high as possible leaving axle on the ground
 
Thanks James. I'll have it done next service for piece of mind. Really can't afford to have it done less than 1k after a service. Wish I had read about it before and I would have had it done at the time. Ah well. I drive slow and easy so fingers crossed we'll make it to 180k. :)
 
I'd love to be more hands on but as it's my only vehicle I'm hesitant to mess it up!
hi, it really is worth getting it checked asap. i have a 2001 es with 150,000 on the clock, and like most people i thought its 14 years old 150,000 on the clock it must have been checked/repaired already. WRONG. in september this year was driving up a fairly steep hill locally and heard a high pitched screaming noise from the engine, i looked down and saw the oil light on, luckily i was able to pull over and stop straight away. all this took place in a matter of seconds. i just knew what it was but i did not want it to be. i had it towed home and asked my wife to kick my arse. to cut a long story short i was very lucky. it really is an easy job to check, sooner rather than later.
the high pitch screaming noise is the oil pump bolt trying to wind itself through the sump, as the bolt cant actually fall out.
 
It's a pretty straight forward DIY job especially if you follow Urban Panzers how to on his Discovery2 website, the hardest part will be getting off the front crossmember.

OK. You had me with that info. I'll try and get it checked this week when am off. :)
 
I'll be having it done Wednesday when I'm off. Hope she holds out till then! I really want it to hit 20years and 200k miles. :)
 
I've changed two TD5 oil pump bolts, the first was my old '99 TD5 GS in 2010 the bolt was tight, but didn't have any locktite on.
Then I bought a '00 TD5 ES and replaced the bolt in 2010 it was tight, but had already been replaced with the later locktited bolt!

So in my personal experience, 50% have the later bolt fitted :D

I agree, well worth doing for the piece of mind let alone in the very unlikely event that it does come loose and go pop.

Remember, you only ever hear the bad stories online, never the good - how many TD5 D2's were sold.....? ALOT!
