Not good news, on Friday the 1.8 started to lose power under load (steep hill, flat in 4th)

Pulled in to the roadside, got the tools out and quickly narrowed it down to no firing in cylinder 1.

Didn't get a chance to do some checks until Sunday and today. Originally thought it was an injector issue, but turns out there is ZERO compression on cylinder 1 :(

The engine had the MLS gasket fitted Jul 06, not sure why I lost compression so quickly?? There was a slight misfire developing over the last few months, but the old girl pulled like a train.

Currently the FL is only used a couple of days a week, as I commute by other means.

The head is coming off tomorrow evening in the dark and rain, will take some pics,

Not too hopeful about the outcome, but time will tell (already thinking of a series LR ;) )
 
TBH I'm not sure if it is the gasket, will know in due course.

I fear the worst........duff piston, have asked the MG boys if I can source a replacement.

Can all components of T-series be sourced for a complete rebuild. The thought of a trial fit had crossed my mind. If someone is up for the task in hand that will be me.

I got some info on the T from G13SJC, waiting for his confirmation, sent him a PM and will upload that and other info into the T-series thread.

The FL is still running on 3 cylinders, 3 outta 4 aint bad ;)

It will be a How To by torchlight ;)
 
best to get a spares or repair T220 turbo - coz yu will need the ECU, injun, gbox, intercooler etc.

Q's for yu to think about....

2wd or 4wd?
LSD or not?
will the 220T ECU speak to a canbus?
 
I'm not worried about all the looms, they are essential, as is the ECU.

We know the T will bolt to the PG1 box, I'm still concerned over dimensions from centre of crank to rear of sump. IRD may foul, in which case it would have to be 2wd, or shave some alum off ;)

Will take a pic of the minimal clearance between the IRD and block when I have the inlet manifold off.

Sourcing some parts may prove difficult, I would have to check, Caterham and Lotus, Xpart.

Sort of need the FL up and running asap, it's my workhorse, I would want to drop the engine and fit another, could be done in a day.

Re: the T, looms are fine, any re-prog of the ECU may be a problem

Cylinder 1 packed with sem, wasn't what I was thinking, would get the compression up.

I'll even fit a new spark plug, hand you the keys and let you crank it over.

Ka booom!
 
Just curious to know will you be fitting the modified oil rail this time N.I.? I wonder if it does actually make a difference or not.

I for one would be gratefull of a 'how to' from you. I've only stripped it so far myself to change the cams with the head still on. Would give me confidence if my head gasket was to go again.

Will be interesting to see what you find when you take the head off - I wonder if it may be a valve problem rather than the HG.

If you changed the cams then you are halfway there. Verniers aren't easy to set up.... allegedly ;)

Anyway, I might be looking a recruit if it all goes belly up.

The 'how to' won't be happening tonight, I'm got delayed in work and just cycled a 28 mile trip today (well I do that most days), I'm good but not that good :D ;)

After phoning round a few local scrappies, not a k-series to be had.

I did source where to get new engine components online. If it means a rebuild.

Even Turner engineering have run out of 1.8 blocks, only heads available.

I'll not know until I get the head off, what's wrong. Have internal micrometer to check cylinder bores, ovality, my engine is red standard.

Will I fit a new rail.......probably tnot, only if I was going to beef up the power to 170 horses.

If it was a rail issue, then I would expect hgf, but oil, coolant are all sound.

Some MLS have reported to delaminate, as I was probably one of the very early batches, this is a possibility, but again hgf is not obvious.

Weather is supposed to turn again, any progress will be uploaded.

I'll probably pick out the tech posts into a single thread in Q and A section

Yes had thought of that, she just started pinking before fading on to 3 cylinders at the apex of the hill.

Engine is not noisey and tappets sound ok, but difficult to tell

If it as then it would save me some time, money and hassle.

I'm also £70 up if I strip the FL down of all salvage parts (even my window cables ;) ) and have it recovered as a rolling shell.
