Got my 2001 TD5 back from a very highly thought of and reputable LR mechanic of over 30 years after noticing coolant leaking from fuel cooler. He pressure tested and once replace O'Rings (which were square!!) I got what we call the Nik Tick down here, I was confident it was good to go. But, it's STILL losing coolant. He tested for cracked head, etc.....I've tried bleeding myself (elevating Expansion Tank, till smooth flow of coolant, replaced cap with LR.. original, even elevated the front of vehicle about 18" and bled again, done this too whilst at 1500 Revs. Still getting about an inch drop in ET level overnight. Other than that runs fine and heater etc works spot on.

Any ideas VERY welcomed!!!

You don't say if the coolant level continues to fall until the expansion tank is empty?

After changing the coolant, my 2005 TD5 always settles at just under half full in the expansion tank.

lf l top it up to the "high" mark it soon drops, but then stays at just under half.

lt's done this for the last 70,000 miles so l don't think there's a fault.

lf the coolant level continues to fall, then it could be that it's being pressurised by a fault in the cylinder head, not necessarily a crack but maybe the head gasket.

l believe that this was more likely on the earlier TD5

Okies....I'll leave it without topping up and see how it gets on. Maybe I am being too cautious re the 'Level' mark?

The level marks are only for the benefit of 'Work Opportunity' kids doing the services at main dealers.

The level will move up and down a bit.....hence expansion, and way it has range (min- max) ....thus higher when running & warm, lower when cold. As long as its between the min and max when cold you are all good.

As above, if l top mine up to over half full it soon drops to just under half.

lt's always done this, it doesn't drop any further than about 1cm below half full in the tank (checked in the morning when engine is cold)

Don't think there is a min/max level on my Expansion Tank. Only a 'level when cold'....which it's never level to
