Hub Replacement...?

Hi Guys,

I've managed to acquire a new LR front hub which I'm hoping will fix my whine...

Just trying to get all the bits together that I'm going to need at the weekend so I'm prepared.

Wrt to the staked nut on the end of the driveshaft - do I need to replace this with a new one, or can I reuse it and restake it? I assume with a punch? Anyone know what size socket will fit?

Looking in Rave, it states that I should apply Loctite 648 to the splines on the driveshaft, but it seems rather expensive. Is this really necessary and if so, will anything else do the job?

Any tips on removing and refitting a new drive shaft seal? Rave suggests a special tool...

Anything else I should be aware of...?

just had mine out when i did ball joints, size wise cant remeber exactly was bigger than 27 possibly 30mm

i reused the nut no dramas and didnt locitie it, should not need to with a stake

did my drive shaft seals as well.

only special tool i used was a big socket that was about same size and made sure it was square lined up and tapped it home

the hub maybe a bit stiff to come off, dont be afraid to hit it a few times with a hammer on alternate corners.

hub off is quite easy
watch out for ABS sensor, if you break it they are £100

you will struggle to remove it intact, just be careful when u remove the driveshaft, i didnt with the first one>

Top tip, undo driveshaft nut with brake calliper attached and have a mate stand on the brake pedal will maybe hold it still, i didnt but have some big sockets and a big breaker bar>

If you copper slip it all on the way back together then if you have to undo it again it will be al good.

Another quick stupid question, how does one unstake a staked nut...? is there a correct way?

The loctite is for the splines apparently - I think it absorbs some of the movement in them - I seem to recall reading that it was a LR specified fix for slop in the driveshafts when new!

Just hope all my new bits arrive in time!

ideally find something the perfect fit for the keyway and then tap it in underneath the staked bit

once you have it mostly raised a screwdriver will do for any minor tapping

I used the handle end of a big file, it was perfect fit
