Hi folks, just quick one... slight oil leak on front hub running down outside of wheel? I've had quick look but wanted couple words of advice, please. I cvan see there is a grub screw type on the hub. What should the level be and what type of oil ?

Sorry not researched enough, but in a bit of rush.

Cheers:confused:

Sounds like you have freewheel hubs which may be leaking - any chance of a piccie? A good diagnostic for leaky hub seals would be oil in the brake drums.

If it is the standard hubs ignore the grub screw type thing.
If leaking then you will need to sort that, usually just a felt washer.
For oil it is EP90 in the swivels and there is a drain plug and a filling plug on the back of the hub, obviously fill until it starts to come out of the fill plug.

Thanks both. I'm sure they are standard hubs, but don't have a camera or posh phone to confirm with pics. out of interest what size is the imperial grub screw? Only have meteric allen keys and want to get some imperial ones, just don't to get wrong ones... Cheers and sorry for stupid quetions. had truck some six months but done little with it as yet due to lack of time and money. Guess I should invest in imperial spanners as well???

Where is this allen head grub screw?

The end of the hub with the six bolts in, there is a grub screw inbetween two of the bolts, or at least there is on mine.

Wayne, you don't touch this, turn the steering full lock and stick your head behind and you will see at the bottom of the rear of the hub a stopper plug (usually has a square head on it) this is the drain plug, Further up the hub (about half way) is another plug (again usually square head) this is the filler plug.

If changing the oil:
1, jack up and remove wheel,
2, remove 'filler plug' first,
3, place container underneath and remove drain plug,
4, let it drain out (leave for a good 10 mins,
5, put in drain plug,
6, pour in EP90 in the filler hole until it starts to come out (now full)
7, refit filler plug.
8, put wheel back on and that is one side done!

John.

I've got a grub screw holding the brake drum on, but not on the end of the hub. These are usually slotted screws, not allen headed. Do the front hubs (the bits sticking out of the wheels) look the same as the rear hubs?

the screw fitted to drive flange is bearing hub oil level fitted to early series 2 vehicles, earlier and later using grease ,grease is fine too even though oil will leak in too

One lives and learns. I've always found plenty of oil works its way into the hub from the swivel.

So to resurrect this subject!! Ive now got oil leaking from both rear hubs. I thought I could buy a simple seal...but it seems there are loads of different types...felt, leather, different size rubber ones......Im easily confused..It seems all the parts I buy never fit. Ive also just got some wiper arms and they dont fit either.....they are for a splined fit whereas the ones fitted are smooth push on with a bolt. Which are the correct seals and wiper arms!!! Help!

1981 Series 3 SWB 2.2 petrol.

Right...sorted out wiper arms. Ive looked at the breather and I assume its a pressure valve type thingy?? Theres no way of removing it, it has a small alloy ring around it with a plain top. It looks rusty and doesnt move up and down? I plan to change the seals etc etc but not sure which type...

I asked this last year, do a search to get the part numbers from that.
Take the breather off and fit a new one or a bsp fitting coonected to 2m of plastic 8mm tube. Mine was really blocked!
Now it leaks oil at a much more reasonable rate:D
