Hi,

My long running battle against spending yet more cash on my 110 has taken another blow with the latest trip to the garage resulting in being told a new engine is required. (Head gasket was gone and it wasn't sounding pretty).

I don't have access to my own workshop and don't really have the time to sort out trying to do it myself.

For a straight swap for another 300Tdi what's a reasonable quote from a garage?

I've looked around on the net and the only thing I've found so far is this:

Products | National Engine Centre
(£1350 all in)

Any other options?

Cheers

I know a lady just up the road from me who's just had an engine swap...she bought a scrap disco for £250, and a local mechanic charged £600 labour to do the swap. I would say that's probably at the cheap end of the labour scale.

HTH,
Lew

If the head gasket's gone, you can replace the head gasket, you don't need to replace the whole engine???? Or is there more to it than just the head gasket?

Having chatted to the mechanic today I was getting the gist that the cylinder bores are worn and I'm getting excessive pressure in the crank case, this was also interferring with the coolant flow. (trying to learn the lingo still).

DiscoLew, where abouts is this mythically cheap garage?

Cheers

bore wear has nothing to do with coolant system .,block may be cracked (unusual) head cracked more common ,head gasket verey common usually caused by poor coolant checking or rad not cooling over entire core surface, tdi bore wear is rare ,

£135 too cheap for proper recon + fitting ,i know i do them myself ,could buy good second hand 300 ,same engine in def disco unlike 200 £500 ish fitting £200

Jai, I'm located up in Biggleswade. The vehicle is somewhat closer to Stevenage at the moment while other issues get sorted (attempted theft last year / bodged fixes by insurance company garage etc.)
