i have just got a genuine hi lift jack, the "extreme" model, been practising before using it in anger.

got a 110 , jacking with the proper adapter through rear cross member holes.

going up is fine, handle in up position, change the catch to down position and pull handle down then back up again and as soon as i raise handle to vertical it literally drops the LR to the ground, rather than the step by step lowering i was expecting. I know the hi lift is supposed to drop when not under load but surely i should be able to lower steadily under load?

what am i doing wrong?

many thanks

ya lifting the handle too high keep it between 2 & 4 Oclock position. when raising and lowering.. Also never ever ever let go of the handle while using it, (unless the landy starts to slide sideways and keep your body and head out of the way of the handle. Arms length operation is always your best bet.

very many thanks redhand, i followed your instructions and it worked fine.

it lowered slowly as it should under load.

however, i know i'm a novice but these jacks are seriously dangerous , i can imagine what would happen if you did let go of the handle underload, i presume it would smash towards the jack and LR and anything inbetween. then there is going too vertical with the handle when lowering and the vehicle just drops. without load it just drops when the catch is moved or you release the brasss catch that holds the lever vertical, any feet nearby watchout.

i will think carefully before using it!!!

am i just being a wuss?

thanks again redhand

thanks one and all, i feel a bit less of a wuss now!!!

i've got a huge trolley jack, a hydraulic bottle jack and the normal land rover pillar jack but i was interested to see what the hilift could do.

i'd nearly always use the trolley jack at home but then i can't get the axle stands in.

However, i have got stuck once or twice in a work 110 in seriously deep muddy ruts and no winch so we thought the hi lift would help self recovery in an emergency

that's my excuse anyway, i just like big toys!!

thanks again everyone, and any other novices out there, don't even think about using a hi-lift based simply on the basic instructions on the handle!!!

practise at home on flat solid ground and follow all the words of experience above. do not ever put the handle vertical under full load

thanks everyone

jus to add a wee bit to that mate.. You should leave the handle verticle when lifted and stable - but make sure the latch is in the 'lift' position. Its a bit safer then.

Good technique for getting outta ruts with a hi lift - put the lift in the middle of the LR (chassis, bumper) and jack it right to the top of its lift. Then, standing well clear, push the LR hard from one side - itll then fall off the jack and land next to the ruts, sorted!

ALso, with the trolley jack, you can pick up the entire end of a LR. Put it under the middle of the axle, and jack it up! Then you can get axle stands under it.

In fact its just offset from the middle, but still near enough.

Have fun landying - with a bit of thought you would be amazed what a hilift can do, lifting, seperating, pulling, squashing, they are great!
