Hi everyone.

I hope this isn't a really stupid question.
Iv got a 1989 110 defender CSW, with a leak between the gearbox and transfer box. I know I can get a gasket set from paddocks but I don't know which one.

So how do I identify what transfer box I have?

Nearly everything I have in my defender has been chafed by who ever had it before me and I can't ask them.

Any tips would be brilliant as I'm having it taken out in Thursday and iv got to supply the gasket set by then.

Cheers Steve

theres no gasket between the 2 boxes and they shouldnt be sealed between the 2 in any case, theres a rear seal on gear box and input seal for t/box (icv100000 is the seal for both )transfer boxes often leak from were intermediate shaft protrudes out of the front of t/box case which can look like a leak between the 2 boxes, rtc3890 gasket set will contain all thats needed which ever lt230 is fitted unless its a 300tdi t/box which dont and shouldnt have gaskets fitted, gasket set should include a new oring for front of intermediate shaft a little silicone on oring helps there as case wears

iv been told its leaking from a shaft/rod/pin? that passes through the two or links them. not being a mechanic I have no idea, but I will crawl under and take a photo of where it appears to be coming from.

I was told to get a full gasket kit as it has to come out to fix the leak and its worth doing them all whilethey have it out.

Iv been quoted £165 + vat to do it.

The garage asked me to get the gasket kit as they recon their are loads of different ones.

cheers steve

if it is leaking from either seal between the 2 boxes a gasket is unnecessary, ive been reconditioning those boxes since the early 90s and i can assure you there is only one gasket kit ,which covers all

As promised I crawled under to take some photos.

he first one shows a large plate, that I had the gasket changed on as I thought it was leaking from their. It cost me £70 to get that one done, but once the oil was topped back up it started leaking further up.
The next two pictures show where we think the leak is now coming from. The second of the three pictures shows the area currently being covered in oil from underneath and the last picture shows the gap that the oil appears to be coming from, well somewhere up in the dark area anyways.

So the garage have said I need the gasket kit to overhaul the complete box while its off.

I am getting the feeling this now isn't necessary and does the box even need to come all the way out?

I recently changed the rear wheel caps, half shafts and rear UJ's as it had massive amounts of slack. The transmission dropped the odd drip before that but since then its weeing out everywhere, my brand new block drive looks ruined.

My 200tdi is now leaking everywhere I go, where as my mates 300tdi 90 that is used every Saturday and Sunday for off roading never leaks anything.

Mine is my daily drive for pleasure and work so hence my worry about it, if it stops working being self employed now, id be stuffed.

looks like theyve used silicone ,which is not an issue unless its used instead of gasket on front output housing or pto cover as gaskets are 12 thou thick ish and fitting or removing alters the preload (shimming)on diff and input gear which would seriously shorten box life, you do not use gaskets on 300tdi onwards t/boxs,and you must on 200tdi and before t/boxs , looks from pics that oil may well becoming from where intermediate shaft enters t/box ,youd need box on the ground to fix , once resealed nut on rear needs tightening so it just removes free play from the intermediate gear bearings which requires sump plate of to check gear as you tighten
