The tip of the key has snapped off in the ignition barrel.

I have removed console, taken electrics of back of steering column lock and prized base of steering column lock off, so the steering wheel is free, but even with fob and broken key in barrel, turning the electrical end of ignition barrel will not start disco.

SO I really have to get the tip of the key out (I have a spare key).

I have inserted the broken key with a dob of Sikaflex on to see if it will draw out broken bit (fat chance).
Any other method?
Tweezers didn't work.

Even if I can remove the ignition barrel (remember they are bolted on with shear off nuts) will that help remove the key tip?

Cheers if you know a trick or two.

I drive a '93 LSE but on my ignition, you have to use a chisel and make a notch on the shear nut and turn it out by tapping the notch with a screw driver. Then you can get to the small screw that allows you to remove the barrel.

It's odd that you couldn't start it with electrical end. I turned mine over that way.

Yes, I hung the fob right next to the broken key inserted into the barrel and when tried to turn engine over, dashboard lit up and a little red key warning light flashed up _ I couldn't figure out why either.

Thanks for heads up re- grub screw to remove barrel.

Unfortunately I prized out a plug at base of the barrel (hoping there was something in there to release barrel) only to find that I broke a piece of aluminum (but caught the two springs) and although it has released the stearring lock, repairing it will be difficult (epoxy and glass fibre bodge me-thinks)

Cheers

The ignition switch block has to be in contact with the bottom of the barrel to energise the pickup ring, around the key hole.

Yes, you are all right.

Just went out and hung the fob UNDER the key (I balanced it above the key before), and I could start it.

But as the console is all in pieces and the key is taped into the barrel whilst the sikaflex tries to cure (you never know, it may work), I won't drive it tomorrow.

Anyone know, is it dangerous not to repair that bit under the barrel (where I broke the metal that holds the 2 springs that lock the steering column)?

I can't see the column locking by accident (can it)?

It will just be case that I can never lock the column again (isn't it?)

I had the same problem after taking the electric end off mine. I didn't trust that the endcap would stay on so I bound it tight with 2 zip ties connected end to end passing over the center of the end cap and then over and through the clear areas above and below the steering column and tightened down before I put the covers back together.

Can't find my disk, it must still be at my mates.

There may be an exploded view on there

I'm looking at the disco 1 pdf manual now and will trawl through it - thanks for that - forgot It was lurking on my laptop.

Will get back to you if I find out where the grub screw is to remove the barrel.

Cheers
