I am going to look at a 2005 L322 this weekend. It has full service history and looks to have been very well looked after.

Mileage is approaching 145,000.

What sort of mileage should I expect from a petrol engine?

Is this one to avoid? Price is very attractive, hence why I am going to see it.

Mines on 157/8K miles..

They should go for ever if well maintained and all the niggles are dealt with in a timely fashion.

The M62 with the Alusil Liners is a strong unit (pity about the VANOS system) and if looked after will be a good performer

Thought yours had a new engine Saint?

I seen an L322 on ebay about a year ago, new engine with 40ish k and a new box, all dealer fitted... is that your one saint? It was blue....
Nope. My engine was on 25K when i bought it last May, bought from a small indy garage up the road in the village.

No reason for engine change in the Service Book, but I checked with my Local LR Dealer and they confirmed it was a dealer supplied and fitted engine - never told me why it was fitted....

I can only assume it may have been PCV or VANOS related!

What is this pcv and vanos you speak of?

PSV is a crankcase ventilation valve that is fitted to the rear of the V8 intake manifold, the crud up with age and can lead to excess crankcase pressure and force oil out of various gaskets. Also their associated hoses and other parts need renewing or cleaning out. Its a £70 part and its a pig to do.

Vanos is variable valve timing in BMW speak, they are units which mechanically alter the cam timing, either the intlet or exhaust, im not sure which.
The units, which attatch to the camshaft operate under oil pressure which is signalled by the engine ECU and possibly gearbox ECU to give a wider power band and possibly aid emissions.

They rattle as they age, although there is an aftermarket seal kit from a company called Besian i think, this is supposed to be an alternative to fitting new vanos units, at least for a while anyways.

Whats the price if you don't mind telling us?;)

:)
+1, a well maintained straight 6 diesel is likely to be good for 250/300K miles. Only good bit in the L322 is the M57 engine

gearboxes are fine if looked after.

think mines still on the original gearbox

still perfect. just change the oil and filter every year, then crap cant build up and trash the box ;)

Brightest flame burns quickest & all that :D:p
Totally agree, unless you need to enter a ploughing match there is no justification for putting yourself through the misery of Diesel ownership.

And to reach that mileage they will need turbo's, heads, engines, pumps, injectors, injested swirl flaps ? i like a bit of flaps,(or at least i did until Michael Douglas spoiled it for us) lol:D Greatest attraction is red diesel off course, don't bloody deny it...lol

Bull****.

Take at look at what the yanks are getting out of them. They knock up huge miles in no time. 300k plus on some of them.

Ahh, i would off course expect an American to tell the unadulterated truth and NEVER exagerate on any topic...:D
So wow, 300k, unbelievable:D, plus, they have Looong highways and in majority of states its a 50mph limit....

It is a different type of driving. The engine spends it's hole life idling. Might as well fit hour-meters in the US vehicles as you'd get a better reflection of wear.
