Ahh, i would off course expect an American to tell the unadulterated truth and NEVER exagerate on any topic...:D
So wow, 300k, unbelievable:D, plus, they have Looong highways and in majority of states its a 50mph limit....

Majority speed is 70mph on all express ways/interstate Some are 80mph and some are 90mph (texas) and some there is no speed limit;)

I drive on interstate between 75-82mph in my diesel pick up. And got 300k out of a GMC 6.0 liter petrol.doing a hundred miles a day Oil changed every 6k aair filter every spring trans filter every 50k. UJ's greased on oil changes and never had to replace one, Original ball joints/tie rod ends. had radiator fixed once at 225K and 1 heater core replaced, 1 thermostat replaced, and brakes about 50-60K was a 3/4 ton 4x4 farm use, in the mud, pulled trailers, hauled seed, and 1000 gallon liquid fertilizer tank tandem axle

Really? It was 60mph or even 50 in places when I was last over there with big signs saying NOT 1 MPH OVER or we will stop you:eek:

when was that? Big metro areas LA, NY, Boston might have lower speed on the city highways but outside them areas speed is faster. I have not seen 60 MPH on the interstates highways having 60 mrh since the 1980's

Maximum posted daytime speed limits on rural interstates: (SEE MAP IN LINK)

Speed limits have traditionally been the responsibility of the states.
In the mid-1970s, however, Congress established a national maximum speed limit by withholding highway funds from states that maintained speed limits greater than 55 mph.

The requirement was loosened for rural interstates in 1987 and completely repealed in 1995.

As of today, 37 states have speed limits of 70 mph or higher on some portion of their roadway systems.

Late 80's driving from Virginia to Toronto, bloody frustrating.

Old speed laws all that changed in 1995. Now you can run 75-80 and not fear a ticket. There is a motor law called keeping up with the flow of traffic, and according to conditions. If you are passing everything on the road then you are going to fast, If just passing a few then OK:D Most cops will not stop you in going less than 10mph over, to much paper work and no traffic points.

Yeah I spent three weeks driving around Nevada and Arizona a few months back (J**P Grand Cherokee) generally did 80-85 - covered about 1,400 miles, no-one looked at me twice.

How you like driving that fast? What you think about our road systems? Did you enjoy your visit? How did people treat you?

It's the usual motorway speed in the UK (about 15mph above the legal maximum) so it felt normal to me. The roads were generally great - apart from Las Vegas which was a huge traffic jam 90% of the time! The people are great - Americans in the US are usually lovely people - been all over the 'states and have never felt uncomfortable. All the ****holes must come to the UK for vacation! :D
