Hi all, my coolant is just water at the moment and need to add antifreeze. It's a 2.5 n/a (12j) and I'm after how many litres the whole system is all the way up to the header tank so i can mix in antifreeze. can't find the answer anywhere and Haynes is not very helpful. Or I could just poor "a load" in and hope for the best haha. Cheers.

I know it's quite a bit. You could drain it first (not gonna do any harm getting any bits of muck out). And then mix the anti freeze a litre at a time. Once done, post on here How much it took and we will know for next time :)

Or you can just put 3/4 gallon of antifreeze in and top it up!

I have a 110 and the colour is about right once it's been mixed!

Never thought of it as being a precise science!

"can't find the answer anywhere and Haynes is not very helpful"

Time for a new pair of glasses perhaps??????

Haynes manual.
Chapter-1, Routine maintenance and servicing.
Section 1.4, Lubricants, Fluids & Capacities.
Capacities, cooling system:-
10J & 12J engines 10.80 Litres.
19J, 200TDi & 300TDi engines 11.10 Litres.

Sorted!:D

Hi can anyone help please? I need to do the antifreeze on my defender 90 300tdi and i've just looked at the capacitites on here. Ive rang GT and theyre telling me theres no need to do a full change but as far as im aware its mostly water in it at the minute so would a full change be best or not? Theyre telling me it needs green antifreeze but ive read that its red it has in? Sorry to sound so clueless

Red is normally OAT, with particular additives for Aluminium parts. It has the advantage if being long life too.
If yours is mainly water, I would drain it and give it a good flush, but don't forget you only add antifreeze to about 30%.

Why do they say there is no need for a full change? If you have any doubt about the condition or strength of the anti-freeze then a full change is required.

Green was the type used originally but red has been recomemend for several years now but it is important you don't mix the two, a full flush is required to be certain there is no residual if changing types. I know many people don't like the red so if in any doubt just stick to the green (I use red in my 2004 model 300TDi).

Get yourself a £1 tester from Halfrayds, and yu can check it yourself

Thank you :)

I don't know i probably sounded like i didn't have a clue what i was talking about when i rang up  haha
He said it'd take too much so it wasn't worth it but it needs doing so i'm going to do it properly.

Thank you

I just drained it, flushed it then stuck in 5 liters of antifreeze then topped off with water

the old stuff hides everwhere so all pipes off and hose rammed everywhere
