How easy is it fit new synchro springs in a s3 gearbox? Any advice?

Hi all. After taking the gearbox out of my landrover and replacing the gear with the chipped teeth, I (my dad) found some bits of some synchro springs come out with the oil in the bottom of the sump. How easy are these springs to replace? Gearbox is still out, and he's reluctant to put it back in without either replacing them himself or getting someone else to do it. Any advice would be much appreciated. Cheers, Gareth

Do not put it back.

Something is very far wrong if those pieces can escape from where they should be, so apart from crunching gears because half the synchro bits have dropped out, something BIG TIME is probably about to happen as well.

Rebuild time I'm afraid ...

hi charles, hi steve.....thanks for the link, i was going to post it too as i found it this afternoon on the net too. saves me a job!

yea, the bits look the same as in the pic in the link. think we;re gonna have a go at putting them in tomorrow when ive been and got some new ones. as far as we can tell, there is no other damage, but i know its not always what you can see thats the problem! its been crunching gears since i got it a year ago, 3rd to 4th, and last week off roading i stripped 2 teeth of that big main gear thing in the transfer box. so ive (my dad has) got a new one, replaced it, but found the bits of synchro springs too. now cos its out, it seems a shame not to replace them, cos its obviously not going to go away, but the question is why have they broken up and will it tdo it again. My dad had a series 3 years ago and it apparently always crunched gears cos of this, but it never broke down or anything.

I think it'll be a case of putting new ones in and keeping fingers crossed that it goes ok!

Might be worth checking the synchro mechanisms for wear, i read somewhere it was recommended to change them as a matter of course, watch out foir refilling with the correct oil , theres been a few posts on using GL5 gear oil which can corrode some copper/bronze gbox parts
good luck with rebuild lets know how it goes
