posted this thread the other day
http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f8/fluid-leak-swivel-joint-192386.html

after having a better look at the problem, trying to wobble wheel at 12 and 6, the movement at 12 is the wheel moves in wards between an inch and 2 inch.
trying to move the wheel at 6 there is very little movement and feels pretty solid, so i think what ever has given up is in the top.
thinking more than swivel pin bearings as the amount of play, poss broken swivel pin?
had rac take it to les potts in sunderland, he's opened up the swivel houysing and phoned thgis morning and said everything needs renewing on that side.
not being the most mechanically minded person i asked what he meant by everything (i know the rough components, swivel pins, swivel ball, swivel bearings, gaskets and seals) he quoted £450 to do the work and i have had no cghoice but to tell him to do it.
basically does this price sound reasonable, les potts is a land rover specialist, only uses geniune land rover parts and have found good reviews on the internet.
would they be changing anything else other than what i mentioned
thanks guys

I wouldn't argue about the labour charge of £130 personally, but the parts prices are just ridiculous. He may argue that he has used LR parts but how are you going to know?

Have a look here and read fully what this kit comprises:
DA3165 | Swivel Kit - front axle non ABS from JA032850

Then you decide. But what's the point, you told the garage to do it before asking on here, so it's all a bit late imo.

I'm feel sorry for you but tbh letting others work on your Disco is just begging to be ripped off. LR's are imo the most simple and straightforward of vehicles to work on.

You may say that you don't have enough tools but the difference between £409.75 and £68.72+vat vat is approx £320 (if you had done it yourself) and you could have bought a lot of good tools for that!!!!

i understand what your saying but before we had it to the garage we had no idea what was wrong, just new something in the swivel, we had to get rthe rac to pick it up and drop it at the garage and garage said they wouldnt know what was wrong until theyhad opened it up and looked inside. £400 has totally wiped me out, possibly no billing, which means i wont be seeing my parents or my 2 brothers, if i thought i could have done it i would, i had a good read of my haynes manual and priced the exact part you posted in your link, at the end of the day it comes down to safety,i drive the car, so does the wife, we have 2 young kids and if i had cocked it up n the wheel came off along the motorway we all know how that would end up.

You have spent the money, but at least you now have peace of mind the job has been done by someone who knows what they are doing.

I would of been forced to do the job myself, (despite being a novice mechanic) because I am skint and not much work about. Its amazing what you find you can do, especially now we have the internet and places like this, youtube, rave and good old haynes.
Try doing it yourself next time there is an issue, just do a load of research and ask the questions before you start. Take photo's as you go along, so if there is a problem, you can show people.
