How does the handbrake work?

As stated, very simple question, but I cannot find this!

Does the handbrake clamp the rear wheels, or do something with the transmission?

Sorry for asking the possible obvious!
 
Transmission brake. That is why it is ultra important to chock the wheels if you lift one side of the rear. Or the car can roll.

All makes sense, sounds ill advisable to do a handbrake turn then :p

Hand brake turns not recommended. Application of a well maintained transmission brake at speed can cause all sorts of damage to the diff, drive shafts and propshaft.

Would it stop the car from speed in the event of brake failure?
