How do you secure your winch?

Hello.

I don't leave my Disco unattended very often, it is not an everyday car, so I'm usually close to it when it's parked up.

However, I'm considering going camping in it etc over the summer months, and I'm concerned about leaving it alone tbh, seeing as it's got a lot of expensive bits that are simply bolted to it, particularly the winch.

So I'm just wondering if anyone had their winch secured somehow, and if so, how?

Locking bolts? Welded?

Looking forward to hearing some ideas!!

a couple of blobs of weld holding each of the nuts on and preventing a socket being used is the way we do it with our work trucks.

I've welded tube to the winch plate, then when the bolts are tight I tack a length of rod through it, just saves welding the winch bolts .

the tube method is clever, like you say, prevents you from actually welding the bolts.

do people tend to do all 4, or just 1...???

Best to do two on the winch , opposite corners.

Don't forget to do the bumper the same, or they just nick the lot .

yeah i was thinking about the bumper!

i can easily weld the nut to the bolt on the bumper. not weld the bumper as such. then i can grind the weld away if it needed to come off, and replace the bolt.

winch tray will take a little fab i think, im liking the tube idea, but might weld flat bar over it (easier than drilling a hole )

You can get armoured rings which hammer onto the bolt head.

Security armour rings

They hammer onto the bolt head, or the nut, and stop nybody putting spanner to them.. When you need to remove the bolts, you'd have to grind the rings off.

just tack a tiny bit of rebar to the end of a few bolts, so the nuts cant come off

They dont work, as the winch is ecured to the bumper (in 9 out of 10 cases) with the bolt heads on the outside and the Nuts, slotted into the feet of the winch. Unless you can get a bolt which shears off, insted of a nut...
