How do you decide on discs

Went to fit new pads to the '03 TD5 today and noticed that the discs had quite a lip on them. Don't have a gauge to measure, but reckon there is as much as 2-3mm at the edge of the disc. So abandoned job until I have sourced some discs and will do all at the same time.

How do you decide on discs, there is such a huge range in prices and types:

Chips: Mail Order 4x4 Front Brake Discs

Bacon: SDB000380M | Front Brake Disc - Mintex

Steak: SDB000380SD | Paddock Performance Front Brake Discs (pair) - slotted and drilled

Anybody got experience with more expensive drilled/slotted discs that make them worth the extra? I don't fit cheap crap to my disco, so I don't mind paying a bit more if I'm getting something for the money.

Thanks for opinions!

Jock

depends on what you want ,ive used britpart cheap discs thousands of times and havent had a problem and on my own found they lasted well ,slotted and drilled are better than stock ,its quality of pad that really matters .like ebc ive found very good ,if you feel concerned about disc by ap lockheed

I changed discs and pads on my TD5 £100 all in from MxM (they have double page spreads) in most mags took me a Saturday afternoon to fit and they work well,

I use my Disco as general run around and find that cheap discs and pads work fine but mine is a manual, if it were an automatic I would want drilled discs and EBC pads to make up for the lack of engine braking on steep inclines.

From experience, the Paddock discs tend to rust really badly due to the poor metal. I binned them after a year and purchased some much better quality ones which rarely had surface rust on them.

Get a set of either the Allmakes4x4 standard discs, or the OEM Delphi/Lockheed discs. Usually cheap enough and are as good as genuine part.

With the pads, the best are the Genuine Part pads. I've used Green Stuff pads and they are not as good as the Genuine Part ones.

May be worth the extra £20 in fitting a set of the guide pin kits, just so they move nicely and don't prematurely wear the new items.

Agree with this, I'm on my 2nd Disco and have used the above part's/supplier's and had no problem's so far.

They do offer better performance (green stuff), BUT hence the faster wear rate. Under normal driving condition's normal pads will suffice.

Not really an issue if all parts are clean, serviceable AND regularly checked.

disagree..still got a set of green stuff on my rangie..after 2 yrs still plenty of meat on them...changing soon as i think abit crap,no dust yes,but not agressive enough and they clog up the grooves in the discs...
oh i do give them some stick too,no poodling around...

re discs,as stated...though i like the cheaper grooved, drilled disc over the ebc discs(have both on different rangies),the ebc dimpled grooved discs clog up easier than the cheaper...both have green stuff pads..
