Hi All,

I have just joined the forum and after reading lots of interesting stuff i now have a question.

I have a leak from my rear axle, i assume it is from the pinion flange oil seal between propshaft & dif. So i want to pull rear propshaft off remove the pinion flange nut, pop out seal & replace & refit.

But i cannot get the rear propshaft off. Rave says there is a rubber coupling but not so on mine, i have a prop shaft with what looks like a ram (auto spacer thingy?) on the gearbox side but no rubber coupling.

I have removed the four nuts from the studs at gearbox side & 4 nuts & bolts from rear axle side but there is no space to remove the propshaft. Do i have to remove circlips from U joint & make spacer that way?

Any ideas on how to get this propshaft out would be very much appreciated.

get a pry bar or screwdriver in the joint on the flange where you've removed the bolts from - it'll just be stuck

Thanks Sean,

But there is physically no space .....each end is loose & wobbles but there is no room to remove the propshaft..cant remove pinion end because of the pinion nut (so not flush wont slide out) and gearbox end has studs & i need to move the prop shaft an inch towards the back of the vehicle to get over these studs but cant move it because the pinion is in the way.

I dont understand why as i changed the spider u joint while travelling round europe 15 yr ago but i think my old one had the rubber coupling....this one is a solid bar aside from the ram type part with a cover.

I have a feeling i will kick myself when someone finally reveals how to.....

yes tried that, there is a small amout of give in the damper/ram but not enough to get it over the rim of the flange and certainly not enough to get it over the flange nut & if i did get it off like that i would have trouble compressing it to get it back on.

The ram bit is a splined sliding joint - it will just be seized due to no or old grease
As already said get a bar across the yoke at one end and give it some grief

just incase your trying to lever something off that's not supposed to come off post up a picture of each end of your prop please

you might want to get an LR Adjusting Tool No 1 to the end of the pry bar

Pictures are attached to be sure ... cover for sliding joint was out of position so there may be all manner of rubbish down it.

i assume these were taken before you starting undoing nuts and bolts - or maybe you put them back on ?

I had to put them back so i could use it ......light is fading now so i will get under in the morning.

Do you agree Sean? Its a sliding joint & just give it some force?

I've just soaked it in WD40 so hopefully it will shift tomorrow.

ok thanks, u joints look good but i will inspect.

The clunk is from front passenger side when take up drive quickly or when going up a steep hill. Used to be a single clunk which can be felt through seat /peddles .....then developed into two clucks....then an hour or two ago i took the little lad swimming ....came to a real steep hill and got repeated clunks.

Have had a look around all i can see is this (see pic, do you know the correct name?) there is a good deal of play, more than drivers side , so i will change the bushes on both sides.

But i get the feeling this maybe more serious than bushes. I will pull it apart tomorrow & check splines etc. Any suggestions of where to look would be handy.

And one more question on forum etiquette, should i make a new post for a different subject (the clunk) or continue in this post?

doesnt look to be much of the bush left - get them both changed, if the clunk hasnt gone i'd start a new thread

To save me asking the man at the shop for the bushes that go in the thingy which joins the front axle to the chassis......what is the 'thingy' called?

It is called the front radius arm, there are two of them.

I would advise you to get a complete suspension bush kit as all the others probably will require replacement.

You can get polyurethane bushes which come in two halves for easier installation. Deflex bush kits are good value for money from most suppliers.
