Hi Guys,

I have an old Fairey capstan winch...all seems to work fine, but I want to take it apart and give it a good clean, only problem is I don't know how to take the bollard off???? I thought it was just a case of undoing the three bolts on the top, but that just seems to keep the cap on - am I missing something really simple here?
I've had a look through the search function and cannot see anything relating to this

Thanks in advance...as always

Trying to remember here (have not had one apart for donkeys' years) but it seems to me that you have to remove the bollard by undoing its connection to the worm gear underneath. Might want to rethink disassembling it if it's working...

Yup - had a dig around and looked at the manuals for the Fairey and Aeroparts winches of relevant vintage - and they do come up from below and are integral with the shaft.

If you want to have a look at Ottawa Valley Land Rovers - Home (Ottawa Valley land Rovers in Canada) you'll find relevant manual pages for both versions of the winch.

This reminded me I have one of them in the garage I've never done anything with - should either do something with it or sell it to someone who will...

Thanks for that Mrchurchill109....looks like there is a pin that goes horizontally through the bollard which I guess just punches out???? I assume that the bollard removes without need to completely disassemble as according to the exploded parts drawing there would appear to be a grease nipple for the shaft under the bollard... will take a look and see how it goes this evening :)

Nope I got it wrong again.... what I thought was a hole with a pin through is stuck as a really stuck thing stuck with sticky stuff... so reckon I'll just have to leave it as it is ?
