Hi all,

Just got myself a Defender 110 200tdi, I'm rubbish with mechanics so please help!!!
I can turn the engine on, select gear, but when I engage or release the clutch nothing happens, it doesn't pull forward or backwards. Revs work, I just don't move.

Weird thing is, I drove it half way across England when I picked it up. Went to drive it a few days later and this happens.

Can anyone help this new to Landy's mechanically incompetent doofus!!?
Thanks
Me.

have you knocked hi/low lever into neutral ,does it drive in diff lock ,can you run through the gears with out pressing clutch with engine running

Is your transfer box in neutral? The lever should be right hand side and down towards you (aka diff lock disengaged and in high ratio) for normal driving.

Thanks for your swift replies, I did take the gaiter off the gear and diff lock to put in some Noisekiller panels, which meant I may have inadvertently knocked it.

Being a simpleton, I thought diff lock needed to be in neutral. Is that not right??

I realise this may be as basic as teaching someone to breathe, but I'll have another play in the daylight and try.

I thought diff lock neutral was for normal driving, diff lock high for loose surfaces, gravel and light grass, and low diff lock for sticky stuff, mud, heavy grass and going through water. Has my knowledge been put on the wrong path so early doors or have I grasped this diff lock 'dark art' witchcraft correctly??

diff lock and hi/low are the same lever but totally unrealated functions ,rh side is out of lock lhs is in lock were ever hi low might be forward is low middle is neutral back is high

..and for normal road driving try rhs (out of lock) and back (high).

If you stick this gear lever in neutral it will do just that, no drive to the wheels, as it is essentailly a second gear box in between the engine; yer "normal" gearbox and eventually the wheels.

stick your location up on your profile.

Someone might be round the corner and can come give you a crash course in Landy's.

Here's a really crude drawing of what you need to do and wher eyour diff lock lever should live when on tarmac.

All, thanks for all your advice, but I think something must be nackered somewhere, as I'm selecting any gear and trying to select either high or low but it just doesn't engage.

Been trying to look through these forums and perished/seized linkages might be what my problem is.

If it IS this, is this a fairly easy fix. The damn thing hasn't moved in over 2 weeks and I'm getting annoyed I can't drive it!!!!

I'm trying to select low or high being in and out of gear to cover all possibilities, but the sodding thing still won't engage. There doesn't appear to be any available 'slot' or 'space' for the diff to engage with, so could this be something more complex or sinister??

Apologies if this seems like such an obvious error, but it's getting very irritating !!?!

Cheers if anyone out there can help !!!!!
Matt

can you rin through the gears with engine running withyout using clutch?have you tried turn nut on t/box where diff linkages reaches box with a 13mm spanner clock wise this will put it in diff lock and eliminate or prove a bust half shaft or diff etc ,removing pto cover and checking splines

Have you removed the tunnel covering the gearbox? Do this and then move the diff lock/hi low lever about. this will show you what is supposed to happen. You will see how to make any adjustment to the length of the rod which selects diff lock, and you can then play about with a 13mm spanner ( i think) until you get your drive back. The same thing happened to me when i removed the front prop, i put it into diff lock but had no drive. Search this and you will find all the info you from J M and others.

Booner North Herts?

You have either knocked it into neutral, popped a half shaft (have final drive issues) or the main shaft has worn out or have issues with your clutch All can all be diagnosed within a few mins by noise and or checking etc should only take 10 mins to diagnose.

If you want pm me your location I may be able to pop over one evening and have a look see. I'm in Luton.

If you want there is a regular pub meet in Dunstabe every first Wednesday of the month. Everyone welcome from 7.30pm the white lion chalk hill Dunstable.

Most common problem is people refitting gbox t box and leaving out plastic bushes which then leaves a sloppy lever Ohh Err which will not give you a positive feel nor give enough throw for the selector to engage correctly.
