How do I increase my mpg?

I increased tyre pressures from 30psi to 40psi, changed the dirty air filter, flushed the intercooler and stopped the fuel cap leaking.

By doing this, I have increased my mpg from 22.7mpg to 23.4 mpg!!

Now what? - Any ideas? (other than taking roof rack off). I am going to do the fuel filter next. My aim is to get as near to 30 as I can!

I've heard that blanking EGR, better intercooler, etc could help. Obviously EGR is cheaper option, but what is worth doing, and would I have to put it back for MOT? What about effect etc of decat?

Vehicle has done 140,000 miles and I can't see any replacement injectors ever. Would cost of these be a good spend and bring fuel consumption down a bit?

it never ceases to amaze me why some people are obsessed by mpg on a defender.you buy a vehicle that has the aerodynamics of a breeze block and weighs as much as a tug boat and then want to make it as economical as mondeo diesal..face it it aint gonna happen

smiles per gallon are far more important

nowt wrong with that rack :behindsofa:
Nah there's nowt wrong with it but when it's eating up all yer diesel and slowing yer down into the bargain????? You see loads of fenders with scaffolding on the roof. Never anything actually being carried in it. I know people like to have them as an "accesory" but fook me they're ugly.

its a 300 tdi with AT's

I suppose I was wondering if it was bad compared to others out there.

Done the economical diesel car and now have 4 kids so can't fit in one anymore. I just had to get something a little bit bigger, so here i am!!!

Have to say it's great and my wife quite likes it as well. People carrier not my thing.

fit a disco tranny box, me 110 along with some full length scaffolding is getting about 36 to the gallon - which is about 10 mpg better than i get out of me 08 mondeo estate when I'm in a hurry

Consider alternative fuels ;););)
I'm paying about 15p a litre for my home brew which eases the pain.

Remove the rack unless you absolutely have to use it. I use mine for ladders as I'm a qualified tree surgeon.
Think about changing the gearing in your transfer box to higher ratios if you dont regularly tow a lot of heavy stuff.
Larger intercooler will help with power and torque but effects on mpg are probably minimal.
Keep tyres at correct pressure.
Get rid of the lead right foot.
Dump any uneccessary weight.

With a Hannibal roof rack ( too heavy to remove and I've got nowhere to store it ) my TD5 90 is averaging 25mpg around town and about 30mpg on a long run so long as I dont go above 60mph. I've had it chipped and got largest intercooler that will fit, no cat and big bore exhaust, electric fan, plus turbo turned up to 1.2 bar. Start pushing it faster and mpg takes a nose dive. You cant change the laws of aerodynamics.

Change the transfer box for one off a Disco (loads of comments in the threads here about that) or put on an overdrive if you can afford it. And take the roof rack off, and inflate the tyres to the right pressure as otherwise when someone pulls out in front of you (like a pedestrian) you'll skid right into them. Splat, then you'll need a new windscreen as well!

Hi, a mate of mine had a remap a couple of weeks back and he said on average he's getting about 8 MPG extra, which I was really quite suprised about! Its made me quite curious about having one done, but its just weighing up the cost of it before you get a return in savings.
My MPG is not great either, pumping up tyres and getting rid of the extra weight seems to be helping a tad, Ive heard of people removing the spare wheel but then you end up with having big holes in the back door and of course no spare wheel!

I honestly can't see how removing your spare wheel off the back door is going to improve your mpg, its not changing the aerodynamics (not that the defender really has any) and its weight is surely not worth worrying about on something that is already so heavy!!

im gettin 27ish from my 110 200tdi, got a roof rack too. mt's would reduce it mind. i know someone who is getting more mpg after fitting a snorkel.... how did you stop fuel cap from leaking btw?
