Have to change the two short brake pipes, one either side at rear of Rangie. I will make these. But out of interest looked up the part numbers. Two tube nuts each side, a few pence at trade prices. 10" to 12" of Bundy tube each side a few pence. 15 mins to flare each pipe.


Rimmers prices quoted.

ANR4709 L/H £30.20, £36.24 with Vat.

ANR4710 R/H £58.62, £70.34 with Vat.


This has got to be the most ridiculous parts rip off in history. :mad::mad::mad:

Yes but they are LR approved! like plane fittings everything has to be fireproof waterproof go through various european testings get a million signatures against it and numerous certs and health and safety stickers!

Be grateful you dont have a boeing, clips on the yokes for plates cost $800 a piece! Near enought the same things you have on a staples clipboard!

Not quite the same as a humble brake pipe though. I know what you mean though i used to manage a department that made parts for Boeing. There was the famous case of McDonald Douglas charging the US Airforce $18,000 for a 5/16 Allen key. They were not amused, but they bought quite a lot of them before it came to light.

We had a guy at the airport that would make shear-pins for the tow bars without anyone knowing, simply becuase Frank Brown charge £171+ vat

my old man works for an engeniering company and they make parts for the oil pumping industry
he was telling me about a certain metal gasket they sell
they buy them in at £275 for a box of a 100 thats £2.75 each. they check each one for exact size and flatnes, bag them indvidualy and sell them for £92 each
now thats a profit of £89.25 each!!!
and they dont even make them:eek:

Still, I have seen much more stupid stuff done when I worked at the airport. Had 1 guy drive in front of an aircraft while it was on the taxi-way?? he was suspended for a week, and clearly the message sank in as the next time he went round the back!! and the van loaded with tools and this idiot was blown down the apron? and they still couldn't sack him?!?!?!

I had to do both of mine after the last 2 NCT tests. I did both myself re-using the fittings from the original pipes. The one thing I will say is that the original pipes have a wall thickness far in excess of the flimsy copper pipe I replaced them with. I haven't measured it but the wall thickness is at least 1.5mm of steel pipe.

So while my replacement, the same as yours cost less than £1 you are not comparing like with like. Its not £30 worth of a pipe but the OE is not £5 worth of pipe either. Its far superior to what I replaced it with.

Incidentally IIRC the two sides are near idenitical except for being handed How come the price is so different?

Yes the pipe will be heavier gauge. So the pipe you are replacing cost Land rover 10p because they buy it by the lorry load. The pipe you are replacing it with cost you 10p because you bought 25 ft from the factors at trade. There is no justification for the lower priced one, maybe a fiver would be too much. But the other one is beyond belief.

Yeah, having seen the OE and my DIY replacement side by side I'd happily pay maybe £10 for an OE one but £75 is off the chart alright.
