hot start problem

I have just bought a DHSE 2001 and find the apparently classic problem of difficult to start when warm, but starts first flick if cold or hot. The "dealer" here in Kampala said sight unseen "new injector pump" There are old blogs on this forum talking about a quick fix cheap solution with a new heater relay i think. It has done 125,000 miles: do i need a new pump anyway? are the quick fix relays still available?

If it starts well cold and also starts well when hot and only gives a problem when warm I'm sure it's not the FIP. The classic problem is difficult hot starting, this can be cured with the "Hot Start Fix" which fools the electronics into thinking the engine is cold.
There are a lot of things you could look at, in tank pump, leak off pipes etc but the best solution is to look at live data on diagnostics to see if the engine temperature sensor is playing up for instance and if the FIP timing is within spec.
Get yourself a Nanocom and save yourself a fortune.

I had the hot start problem on my vehicle, anyway i had the battery die on me so i was given a brand new tractor batttery , put that on and it cured my hot start problems, maybe its not your problem but its worth making sure yours is in tip top condition.

Yep, low cranking speed is a common cause of poor diesel starting

Thanks, already bought a new battery today when i saw the answers to the traction control question on this page and realized I get that warning now and again, and will see how it is tomorrow. Always starts like a new car when cold though. It is actually my wife's car. Why do expensive new(ish) rangies give trouble when my old 1983 just goes on and on and on?

Hope you bought a BIG battery, 107AH 900CCA minimum, 135AH 1000CCA better for the diesel.
