My biggest problem is knowing how to route things that have been fiddled with before. I.e power steering hoses for starters they come of the reservoir and touch the intercooler pipe connection. No matter what I do. Is there any where to get a reference on how they would have been routed.

Rave dose show this drawing of the pipe run , which are clamped to the front chassis cross member. My D1 doesn’t have much in their way, but its very close to stuff at each end.

My D1 has always been OK but my D2 had pipes rubbing against one another all over the place, mostly due to hamfisted mechanics in its past, before I got to it.
I simply took some old domestic garden hose, split it and wrapped it round any hose I was worried about, securing it with cable ties where it was safe and the tie wouldn't rub against anything.

A good example of a cheap solution to protecting external pipes, hoses or even electrical wiring with the slightest chance of rubbing on something else.
And yes cable ties to separate the offending items away from each other is another option.

My first port of call would be RAVE, but if that fails, one us D1 owners could maybe post a few piccies up :)

I will look into getting hold of rave

Good picture but it doesn't show the other pipes. In particular is the two coming off the resivoir touching each other and the bottom Flexi hose connector to the intercooler.
Also the pipe from the heater comes forward, clips to the top of the belt and then goes down and is running the top intercooler hose.
