Up **** creek.
Yesterday I put about 10L of petrol from a jerry can of the father in laws into my Disco, I started her up today and my god there was some smoke, it looked just like my normal exhaust smoke (whilst running on petrol) but quite a bit more. I have no LPG so I cant test her on gas. After a few minutes when she warms up it seems to go back to a more normal level.

Im wondering if the petrol I had was mixed with 2 stroke Would this explain the smoke and what damage could it do? (or would it just smoke more and actually lubricate the engine a little more?)It was from a garden shed.

Cheers:)

Was it smoke or steam?

If it was mixed with 2 stroke, the engine won't mind, but if it has cats they might not be impressed. To the extent that they could end up knackered and then you're screwed.

It may smoke more on cold start because the mixture is richer, once warm it weakens off.

It's not ideal though so consider adding some pump fuel sharpish?

yeah, TBH im not too sure if im just worrying a bit over nothing, I usually run it on Gas so no smoke but ive ran out atm and cant get any until im back on the road.

I havent run her properly for quite a while (5 months) and until yesterday hadnt started her up since before xmas (yesterday I jump started her, let her idle and warm up for about 30 mins whilst having the heaters on full blast to dry/warm her up) I didnt notice the smoke yesterday it was windy and getting dark, today it was really calm and bright.

Ive just checked the water resevoire and it looks as full as usual, would it go down fast?

Just remembered: When i went to start her initially she turned over (a little weakly) but wouldnt catch, Ive noticed this occasionally happens if the battery isnt very charged which was the case. there was quite a strong smell of fuel and when i popped the bonnet and some smoke/steam not much but noticable came out of the air intake entrance. Ive seen it to a much lesser degree when ive stalled on LPG. I just jumped her of our Golf and she started pretty much straight up.

I am not too sure with the engines with electronics on, more of an old diesel man my self, but my old Vitara would run on any old stuff if I had an old can in the garage it went in it LOL, but its a basic engine with electronic ignition and nothing else.
It might be nothing but might be worth draining and putting fresh in for piece of mind

Hello all and thanks for all the replies, quick update: started her up this morning, nothing at 1st, a few seconds later the smoke, not as bad as before but still there:(

So I took her for a little spin to the garage about 4 miles away, on the way she seemed a little lumpy but tbh I was just greatfull she was moving.

Put £25 of High octaine premium unleaded and there was a noticable difference in smoothness and pick up and no smoke (but she was already warm)

I then drove another 6 miles filled her with LPG and drove 2 miles home, so far shes been running like a dream on both fuels (slightly smoother on LPG) but no smoke.

So it looks like it was either A: crap fuel or B: needed a good run, either way everythings back to normal - for now......

Thanks:)
