Hitting the underneath of the car

Is it normal to hear things bang (or rather, a large knock) and clunk against the underneath of the car from time to time when off-road? Such things could include stones, small branches and also the result of very uneven surfaces. (in between ruts etc) It makes me cringe everytime because I'm not sure if it's meant to take this.

Any info would be appreciated. And yes before you ask, the doors are still on the car.

Yes.
Slow down and pick your line more carefully.
Freelanders are surprisingly good off road but need more skill to drive than a Defender, which is basically a point & squirt machine.

Aye thats right. It's either the back box or middle section that gives most bangs as they hit the floor. It's not really anything to worry about until you go over an incline with too much of a sharp angle at top and put a big dent in ur middle box (done that :doh

Sounds daft but check the rear exhaust fixings they might have streched causing it to bang

The back box seemed ok last time I checked. A branch managed to get lodged above it, and it wouldn't come out with ease so I'm assuming it's pretty secure!

I think the metal slider at the front is what hits most of the time. I am guessing the middle section also takes a bit of a knock, because it has got a few dents on it and I don't remember those being there when I bought the car! Man, the Freelander is just insanely low. I have to lift it up just to clean it properly underneath, crazy. And who says Freelanders don't rust?!

Could be worse
The exhaust tends to take most of the damage on the FL1.

Yes that was my back box - and rear wheel !

On the FL2 it's the fuel tank.
