Hi, hope someone can give me some advice.. I have a Freelander, it a 1998 (5 speed 1997cc diesel) It is in very good condition and much loved.. it’s only done 76,000 and it has been looked after with servicing etc... I have a problem, got lots of noises coming from the drive.. I have shown it to the local garage and they think it is the transfer box, only thing is they are not really knowledgeable on Landrover’s and they are not one hundred percent sure it is not the gearbox or both.. I have got to say I don’t think it is the gearbox as when you dive it, it changes gear normally.. Thing is don’t really know how to tell.

I have got to make a decision if it’s worth repairing, but it’s hard when you don’t really know the full extent of the problem, I cannot just drive it to another garage to let someone have a look at it as I not know if it will just pack up altogether.. I live in West Sussex, near East Grinstead, does anybody know of a good reliable (Very knowledgeable on landrovers) mobile mechanic that I could pay to either repair it, or at the very lest give me some sound advice on what has gone wrong..

Any advice would be very much appreciated...

Geoff

:welcome:

If they think its the transfer box, I would change garages - they dont know what they are talking about.

go introduce yoself, then look in the CFAQ section and do the VCU test.

DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR until tested.

Might be a bit far out for you and they might not be able to help if it's not at their place but I went to Dunsfold Land Rover yesterday and they were really good. I haven't for their number but they have a website?

I take it you don't think it's the transfer box.. I had thte VCU along with the bearings replaced a few months ago, the noises are definatly coming from the gearbox area, but thanks for the advice..

Freelanders dont have a transfer box - so no 'I dont :)

it is most likely the VCU, VCU bearings, IRD and/or rear diff mounts.

have yu got the same tyres all round, with newest on the rear?
In an emergency, you can remove the VCU & props and run it in 2wd.
