no thank yu.

hi all, new to here, been scouring the internet for help with my freelander td4 and the awful noises its making!
Started off as a small whine from the rear drivers side after about 30mph.
Thought probably the rear wheel bearing.
It's now making the most horrendous whining and grinding noise, cabin noise is unbelievable.
Could it still be the wheel bearing but comletely shot now?
Also I reversed on tight left lock and heard an almighty crack!! getting worried something serious is wrong. apart from that it drives lovely lol
:welcome2:kimmy all the guys on here are very helpful :):):)

my first time on a forum :) i'm still panicking about the damage on my td4!!! please be a wheel bearing, teachers salary doesn't cover IRD units!!! :(

cars off road now, sounded like the wheel was gonna fly off!!! when i wiggle the wheel what am i looking/ feeling for?!! sorry to be a dunce!!

see if there is movement..if you have the tools i'd ave the wheel and hub off..if its grinding sounds like bearing or brake disk ?

il do that :) know how to take the wheel off - god knows about the hub!! sounded to me like the bearings had completely collapsed (if that can happen?!?)

yep, it happened on my discovery and an old ford I had !...id there no one you know locally that can give you a hand ?

yea, my hubbies got a car spares shop in chelmsford - not that he knows much about cars lol just sells the parts!!
cars parked at his shop so im using his old defender - we'l have a go bit later- thought you might need special tools to get hub off??
what did it do on your disco?

that sounds terrible about hubby and his shop!!! what i mean is he's not a mechanic and doesnt like to tinker!!! :)

ok nick a haynes manual off him for a start so you know what you're looking at ! there will be a big nut holding the bearings in so either the right large socket or a hammer and chisel to move it...simple job as long as the remains of the bearings havnt welded themselves to the stub axle !

he sold his only td4 manual friday!!! bloody typical and i'm not going to halfords!!!! we'l have a look and see what we find!

ahh bless your heart :)
thanks for that, gonna have a go with the wiggle test and then wheel off and see what we find..
i'm just praying its a wheel bearing, even if it means a new hub from damage still be cheaper than ird unit (whatever that is !!!!)

will do - he's got those in stock lol :)
thanks for your help and time, gonna drive the old bone shaker now (defender) and pretend i know what i'm doing with my td4!!

help - is this the IRD!!!!
been under the car tonight and found the lon thing down the car (prop?!) is hanging down and the rubber mount is broken allowing for lots of play.
Wiggled the wheels around, both sides are the same.
there is a major clonking noise now in forward and reverse from the front end of the car, can't tell exactly where from though?! Does this sound like the IRD or could it be other bearings, bushes?!? etc
any help welcome :)

****e - didn't take pics and car is 15 miles away at hubbys shop!!!
spoke to a lr dealer and he said he has only ever fitted 1 ird in the 10 years of working!?!
im at a loss as to what to do because i could get the car to them and cost me hundreds and hundreds just working through the prob before they even get to work on the thing!! should have trained as a mechani not a teacher!!
