Hi all,
I'm just getting into off roading and 4x4's and i am selling my motorbike once im back from the Isle of Mann TT so i can buy myself my own Landrover and start having some fun.
What i would like to ask and im sure you've heard this before (I have looked through the chat forums but there are that many posts i cant find what i am after). I am after a Landrover that will be both good off road but also offer comfort as i intend on bringing my missus, toddler and dog along on what will hopefully become a passionate hobby of ours and one that we can make holidays out of. I'm not biased towards any LR (I love them all) and have been looking at Range Rover Classics (the vougue tdi's), P38's TD, and Discovery 1 and 2. Can some one please shed some light on what they might see as the better option? I intend on adding a few mods such as raised suspension, wheels, tyres, snorkel etc...
I have seen a few P38's and disco 2's with air suspension conversions to springs, are these any good and can you add a lift or are they just standard height mods? Any help would be much appreiciated thanks
 
Defender = Expensive but excellent off road but not that comfy.
Gaylander = Gay
I would go for a Discovery 200/300tdi as you get lots of car for the money and they are very good off road, and very comfy on road.

Sorry, i dont mean to offend, i like the Range Rover, especially the Classic but no one seems to have mentioned them. I know they would be uber comfy but would they b good off road? Maybe one more question too. Whjich is better, the 200 or 300tdi? And how come i never see any P38's modified to go off roading?
 
I've had a Range Rover Classic V8 and now have a Defender 90 200TDI. The comparison in comfort is calk and cheese, the Range Rover was an arm chair on wheels - much better for the Wife and kids.

I much prefer the Defender though, the less electrical gear on a Landy the better! You can really make it your own too. I miss the V8 sound though...

I doubt you'll be disappointed with either:
A disco (as long as it's solid)
A Range Rover (as long as everything works - unlikely:))
A Defender / Series (as long as you like working on it)
 
If you are looking at it as a family car that can cut it off tarmac then definately the Discovery.

The RR Classic is basically the same vehicle (the Discovery was built on the classics chassis and running gear) but the body is obviously different.

The 200 engine is bomb proof and will do stellar miles but is slightly agricultural.

The 300 is also bomb proof and good mileage as well, but is slightly more refined.

If you can find a late 300Tdi that is a Jap re import then that is the way to go, they tend to be rot free and a higher spec, an ideal family car and it will amaze you the places it will go!
 
Thanks for the info guys, going off what you lot are saying i think i'll stear clear of the P38. The Defender wins hands down for me but with us hopefully going make some off roading holidays out of it i think i need to compromise for a bit more comfort when travelling so the Disco it is (like i say i'm not biased to any LR, apart from the Gaylander haha). I dont mind what the condition of the LR is to an extent, i'm a panel beater/welder by trade so that isnt an issue, plus looking around other sites panels and other repair items are'nt that expensive, it was more the engine i was concerned about but going off your input i think i'll be looking for a 300TDi now. I'm already looking all over the place for my new toy even though ive got the Isle of Mann TT to look forward to on my bike. I'd have both if i could afford it but at least having a Disco to play in might make the missus take a bit more of an intrest in what i like:)

Oh and thanks for the welcome, it's good to see a chat forum with a bit of humour in it. The Kawasaki Ninja 636 owners site is as dull as a 1 watt bulb
 
itll have to be a disco i suspect - kids seat wont go in a defender iirc ...

im currently using my 90 as a daily atm(due to insurance complications on my van) and lets just say i wouldnt choose to buy one for a daily ! - but i still smile ... should have seen my colleagues/managers in the carpark when my dirty rusty old `87 90 pulled up in our carpark full of near new beemers and audis.
