Hesitating Freelander 1.8

Hi all, I have a Freelander 1.8 99 (T). Problem is, it hesitates when I drive it, like a starvation of fuel, most of the time its fine, but sometimes when I pull off from a junction my head nearly goes through the windscreen it’s that bad, it’s quite dangerous. It happens from a standing start and when driving normally. When I get it on the motorway at 70 it seems to be fine. Idling is sometimes erratic; the revs drop off to nearly nothing then it corrects itself. I’ve got it booked into an independent LR garage on Friday, is there anything I could check before it goes in and maybe save me some money? It seems to me it could be an electronic sensor/setting. Is that what its called on the rave disc or is it part of the MAF, i'm in Preston.

mass air flow (MAF) sensor is

it's AKA air flow meter

If you pull away very very light throttle it runs okay, hard acceleration runs like bag of ****e?
If so I have had many cars where engine management light not on and by replacing it it solves the problem.

Most cars you can get away with engine warm pulling the plug and starting, if it drives better new MAF (mil light will be on)
( unless anyone knows if the rover 1.8 goes into limp home mode before you try it)

Just searched MAF on other forums and they suggest disconnecting the MAF and the ECU will use a default fueling setting, if this seems ok its the MAF, do you think its worth a try?

Bit confused, can't find the MAF on the 1.8 engine, is it the MAP, if so, this is an integral part of the ECM. Looks like i'll be forking out to the specialists, i just can't help feeling its something simple!

I've checked rave and haynes to no avail...

Anyone shed any light?

no the map sensor is a pressure and not a flow sensor
Look at this

is bolted to the inlet manifold and is black plastic and on yours appears integrated with throttle body
follow the ducting from the airbox it is the black plastic bit which goes from round pipe to square with 4 bolts

Hi fanatic, thanks for your answers, can't seem to find the mass air flow sensor, Rave says its attached to the air filter, isn't this for a diesel. I have a 1.8 petrol and i've looked everywhere to no avail. Where is it?

The reason you cant find it is because its not there.The Mems engine management system on your car uses a Manifold absolute pressure sensor located inside the engine ecu instead of an airflow meter.
If your garage is any good,a session on Testbook is probably the quickest and easiest way to fix it.You could just check the small black plastic pipe that goes from the inlet manifold to the ecu is intact.

head gasket failure as 1.8 notorious, but I'd go with airflow meter

Hope not, oil good colour as is the coolant, i'll get it on the diagnostics on friday and hope for the best. i'll keep you posted.

they have a cambelt at least the last 1.8 I did head gasket had

Of course I was,since when has a bloody K series had a Maf to sense airflow,why dont you get some product knowledge ?

Guys... it could be something as simple and cheap as spark plugs or HT leads. Have you checked these yet?

Could be loads of things tbh... blocked injectors? Try some Redex.
