Hello all!

Can anyone answer a question for me please?

I have just had a front prop replaced on my P38 range rover 2.5dt year 2001 - the mechanic wondered if it was stuck in permanent 4x4 and that had caused the break - also power is down and fuel consumption is up.

Is there a way of finding this out ? any help greatfully received!

Regards

Robin

P38s are always stuck in 4x4 that is their nature. However there is a viscous coupling in the transfer box that distributes power front to back and slips to allow for rotational differences, as for instance you turn the steering. If that is siezed it will stop the centre diff from working and cause the prop problem. Check it by jacking up one front wheel, remove centre cap from wheel and put a socket and long bar on halfshaft nut. You should be able to turn wheel with some effort. If wheel cannot be moved you need a new viscous coupling. Do you get any chopping or pull on steering as you turn a corner? That is an indicator of viscous coupling problems.

Hi

Thanks for the reply

there is no chopping or pulling on the steering at all - i will jack up over the weekend and try your advice.

cheers
